The Importance of Safe Driving
Driver education is one of the most crucial ways to lower the number of fatalities from auto accidents. Through extensive driver education programs, people acquire the fundamental skills and knowledge required for safe road navigation. The classes educated people on traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and the dangers of irresponsible driving. By encouraging acceptable attitudes and behaviors, driver education creates an environment of safety and awareness among drivers, ultimately reducing the likelihood of crashes and fatalities. It also equips divers with the skills necessary to identify potential hazards, react safely and in a timely manner, and make well informed decisions, all of which contribute to the prevention of traffic fatalities.
There are a number of crucial actions that everyone can take in order to reduce the rate of driving related deaths. Above all, it is important to remember that speed limits and traffic laws as a whole are there to keep everyone safe on the road. Avoid using your phone or sending texts while driving because these activities can take away your focus from the road. According to reports, an estimated 3,521 people were killed due to distracted driving. It is also imperative that you never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, since they impair your judgment and make it difficult for you to react safely and in a timely manner. Furthermore, using your seatbelt lowers the likelihood of significant injury or death in the event of an accident, making it imperative for both drivers and all passengers to do so. Accidents can also be avoided by keeping a safe distance from other cars and paying attention to the conditions of the road, particularly in bad weather. Lastly, always pay attention to bikes and pedestrians, giving them plenty of room and yielding when needed. Following too close behind a vehicle can also cause a fatality if the vehicle in front of you suddenly has to break, you want to have enough reaction time to break as well. We can all help to reduce the number of fatal driving accidents by heeding these instructions and exercising caution when operating a vehicle.
In my 20 years of living, I have been in 2 car accidents. My first experience, I can’t remember exactly how old I was, but I remember being young. My mother, brother and I were driving home from church, and my mom put on her left turn signal to turn, and next thing you know, we were rear ended by a woman. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, she was explaining to them that she was on her way to get her brakes checked when the accident happened. Thankfully, none of us were hurt, but with this being mine and my brother’s first car accidents and us being so young, we were very shaken up. My second car accident was a bit worse. It was my brother and I, but this time, my father was driving. He had just picked my brother and I up from school because it was an early release day and we were on our way to the mall. We were stopped at a red light behind another car. As soon as the light turned green, we were rear ended, and we ended up hitting the car in front of us. This accident was the first time I had ever seen my father cry in pain. He was complaining to the paramedics that he was having chest pains and I immediately called my mother crying as well. I was still very young during this accident. I never found out the reason as to why the driver rear ended us, but it may have been due to the simple fact that he was not paying attention to what was in front of him.
I personally believe that I am a very safe driver, especially when I have passengers in the car with me. I have never been in any fatalities or accidents of any sort as me being the driver. It takes both proactive steps to enhance road safety for myself and others as well as my own personal responsibility to become a better and safer driver. First, it is important that I maintain attention and concentration when driving. This includes avoiding distractions such as eating while driving or using my phone while driving. I do not text and drive, however I do tend to scroll through my playlist alot while driving in order to change the song. This is just as a distraction as texting and driving so I will be sure to stop doing this in order to ensure the safety of myself and others on the road. Also, compliance to set safety requirements is possible by obeying traffic regulations and speed limits. I can avoid accidents by being aware of the weather and road conditions and adjusting the way I drive accordingly. Contributing to a safer driving environment includes keeping a safe distance between other vehicles, properly indicating intentions such as turning signals, and providing pedestrians and bikers with the right of way.
