Operating a vehicle is like handling a weapon. It is so important to
do everything you can to be the safest driver you can be. When I came
to college, I realized the upsetting fact that many more people drink
and drive than I ever thought. I do everything I can to stop kids
from engaging in this disgusting habit, and I think if more people
stood up for it, that it would happen less. Drunk driving results in
roughly 29 deaths every day. This number is all too high, and I will
continue to put in my work to stop this. Although it may be
uncomfortable, It could save a life to step in and take charge when
someone is too impaired to drive. Before I left for college, my
neighbor was babysitting a child down the street and the parents
decided that it would be a good idea to drive her home after they
came back. Both adults were highly intoxicated and ended up crashing
their car into the home next door. The vehicle completely tore off
the two front pillars of the home, destroyed the sunflowers that were
resting on the porch, took out some chairs and tore up the entire
yard. My neighbor was young, uncomfortable and terrified in the
entire situation. The adults should have been more responsible. I
remember seeing how afraid my young neighbor was and how terrible the
accident had been. It was completely embarrassing for the woman as my
entire street stood there looking at the mess she had made. After
consoling my young neighbor, we told her that even though she might
have felt uncomfortable she should have called one of us or denied
their offers for a ride home. Although it can be hard sometimes it is
always better safe than sorry. Luckily, everyone was safe but you
never know what could happen next time a drunk driver decides to get
behind the wheel. Do not drink and drive. I can be a better and safer
driver by never drinking and driving and encouraging my peers to do
the same. I always intervene when I see a problem, and I will
continue to do so for the rest of my life.
