As
a high school junior, I have already attended drivers ed. I
would not be the same type of driver that I am today without it.
Drivers ed has a great importance when it comes to this topic.
The amount of casualties on the roads, just last year was about
40,000. This was a 1% decline from 2017 deaths on the roads. When I
took the drivers ed course, there was a night where Zero
Fatalities came and gave a presentation to us and our parents. It was
a very enlightening experience and caused me to want to be the safest
driver I can be.

To
reduce the number of deaths on the roads, a person could not drink
and drive. They could also make sure their car is in working
condition and won’t be the cause of an accident. Someone could also
make sure to not look at their phone when driving. It is a proven
fact that many deaths due to driving are the cause of someone texting
and driving. Don’t drive drowsy or aggressively. These are
sometimes overlooked steps to avoid accidents on the road.

Personally,
I have never been in a serious car accident, but I was in an
accident. On a road near my house, there are lots of curves and it is
a very narrow road, so in winter, it is hard for snow plows to plow
the snow away. My dad was driving to a Maverick for gas and to return
a movie to the Redbox. He hit one of the curves too fast and one of
the tires caught on a patch of black ice. We careened into the ditch
off the road, and unluckily enough, I was not currently wearing my
seatbelt. I hit my head on the window and almost got a concussion.
The rear lights on our car shattered, but no one in the car got
seriously injured. We were lucky that day, but many other people are
not so lucky in similar situations.

I
have also been in a vehicle in which the driver was not driving
responsibly. They were on their phone, speeding, and paying more
attention to what was going on inside the car. They missed a stop
sign at a two-way stop and we luckily did not get hit, but had we
been a couple seconds later, we would have been hit by an oncoming
car.

To
be a better and safer driver, I can take the past experiences that
I’ve had and learn from others’ mistakes. I can take the
necessary precautions to avoid getting pulled over or into an
accident. I will make sure I am never on my phone while driving and
always make sure I have enough gas in my car to avoid that being a
factor in an accident. I know that by doing these things and taking
the necessary precautions can save many lives, including my own.
