One
moment. All it takes is one moment. One moment to look away and your
life changes forever. You could be changing the song on the radio,
taking a bite of your breakfast, or texting your friend back. No
matter the distraction, it matters when being in control of a
vehicle. So many people don’t realize how severe and serious car
accidents can be which is why informing the public on this pressing
matter is so important.
3,287.
According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel,
there is an average of 3,287 deaths per day. It is heart-wrenching to
imagine that so many people lose their lives from driving a vehicle.
This insanely high number of deaths needs to decrease and it all
starts with being educated. Informing the public on driving is
necessary to ensure safety. Most accidents occur because of the lack
of knowledge on the rules of the road. I believe the first step to
decrease car accidents begins with informing all drivers about the
rules of the road and the importance of safe driving.
That
one moment can happen in many different instances. It can be your
fault because you weren’t paying attention or it can be someone
else’s fault because they were drunk driving. There are numerous
variables that come into play when car accidents happen and you never
know which one it will be until it’s too late. In the meantime,
there are multiple steps to reduce the chances of encountering that
one moment. Starting with putting your phone on silent while driving
so it will not become a distraction. In today’s society, cell
phones have become a major distraction, especially with driving. As
soon as people don’t look at their phones while driving, car
accidents will decrease. Another precaution to take is following the
speed limit. Speeding can lead to losing control of your vehicle and
possibly making the accident worse than it could’ve been.
I
have a vivid memory of driving past a truck flipped on its side with
cop lights all around. As soon as my eyes glanced on the sight my
heart dropped. I couldn’t even imagine what happened in the events
leading up to what it had come to. From that moment on I knew that it
was my responsibility of a driver to never let that happen to myself
or anyone else. Unfortunately, that one terrifying moment happens
everyday to thousands of people everyday. Thankfully, I have not
experienced it and I hope I won’t have to.
One
single moment can change a life forever. It is my goal to ensure that
I will never have to experience the fear of being in that moment, nor
putting anyone else through it. I will take action by encouraging my
peers to be safe drivers and not to let distractions get in their
way.
One
moment is all it takes.
