Some
of the best highlights we accomplish in life occur during our teenage
years. Sweet 16, becoming a teenager at 13, driver’s permit, a
full-fledged adult at 18, but we always flock towards the exciting
task of our road test. It grants us a quicker route of freedom before
adulthood. It releases the power to drive, travel, and explore. But,
with every thrilling opportunity, there’s dangers we grow up
learning about: smoking, drinking, wars. We can recite speeches given
to us, without a second thought, we subconsciously follow routes for
fire drills. These things drilled into our heads that might never be
necessary. Yet, they never stress the lecture that could end life in
a second. Driving.

Teenagers
have to study for the permit test and practice driving before the
road test. Learn tips, tricks, and rules of the road. Then, why do
the driving fatalities have a higher body count than six of our top
10 wars with the highest combat death count? We attend hours of
classes to learn how to properly drive, but we’re young, we’re
reckless, and most times irresponsible. Adults get overconfident
after their years of driving. People assume that they’re most
important and rules don’t apply to them. All of these circumstances
create unsafe environments for everyone else. One wrong step on the
pedal, too slow of a reaction time, lack of patience, and then all of
a sudden there’s one more lifeless body on the pavement.

We
need to wake up and face the facts. Our education on driving needs to
be expanded and become just as important as our school studies. A way
to prevent the unsafe driving is to delay the age to receive your
license or permit. Push off the availability to further the education
of people and driving. Another possibility is the input of studies
revolving around driving into the school curriculum. One half year
course every year or one full year course every 2 years. We can add
in a road test every 2-3 years required to keep your license
eligible. Mankind can now be assured we know all the rules and
regulations that are legal on the road, keep our skills in tact. The
more we’re conscious about our driving and the laws, the safer we
can become. There will always be people who don’t adhere to the
laws and rules, but if a majority of citizens can ensure safe
driving, it’s a solid beneficial decrease of deaths.

Accidents
happen. That’s a no-brainer, but we must learn from our mistakes to
move on. Be gentler with the gas pedal, avoid the radio, put your
phone on silent. There’s little things that make such a big
difference in today’s world that benefits safety. We’re all
guilty of the little things because we assume we’ll be fine. But
one accident and we scarred for life. It haunts us and we never do it
again because of the cost. That’s one beneficial thing we can all
get better at. Just avoid the things that can cause problems
entirely. It’s not just our life on the line, but others as well
and life is one of the best things that can be given to us. We take
it granted until it’s gone.
