In
the US, many states have different laws and many different bans put
in place to not be distracted and focus on the road, but some drivers
still abuse those laws and endlessly drive distracted. In order to
save more drivers, drivers ed needs to be engaging, and
distractions need to be at a minimum so everyone inside and outside
of the car can be safe.
Driver
education is a class numerous people don’t take seriously, and when
I was learning, I didn’t take it seriously either. With my
experience, I got two hours, total, in a car with my instructor and
proving not to be responsible for the road at all. My parents
realized and enrolled me in another class where I learned how to
drive responsibly. If we, as a country, come to a consensus to make
drivers ed more rigorous and more intense then we can have
safer roads and more students going to class rather than a cemetery.
Nowadays,
we should be instructing our new drivers, discipline of being off
their phones and paying attention to the road. Personally, I have
seen my parents on their phones while driving quite often. My father
texts all the time, and when he texts, I feel unsafe because he isn’t
paying attention to the road. Seeing my friends driving, not buckled,
and on their phone through social media, makes me weary and concerned
for them. Once I see that they are distracted, I immediately break
communication with them because I am a distraction, and I don’t
want them to get into an accident.
A
few steps I can do to become a better driver is to limit my
distractions. I drive my friends around most of the time, and they
are a big distraction. A way to limit that distraction would be to be
blunt and tell them to quiet down so I can focus on the road. I can
also limit the amount of times I touch my phone. Purchasing a device
that holds my phone for me so I can use my maps, is a helpful buy,
but sometimes I still use my phone to change my music. Though, music
isn’t more significant than my life and my safety, I can either
wait the song out or ask my friends to switch the song for me. I can
help others become safer by not be disrupting and let them drive
without engaging in a serious conversation where they become
unfocused on the road. I can also help by watching other drivers and
other road signs to help them drive safer.
Overall,
knowing that drivers are distracted and that more drivers need to
limit their distractions and become more mature and responsible
drivers. To achieve that, we need to make drivers ed a more
rigorous program and everyone needs to understand the importance of
driving the responsibility that comes along with it.
