In
a modern age, driving safely should be regarded highly and taken very
seriously, as most people are on the road for a large portion of
their lives. In an attempt to reduce accidents, children are required
to take Drivers ed courses to obtain a driving permit or
license. Many students understand the value of driving safely, which
prevents accidents to some degree, but there are still people who do
not understand the risks of taking your eyes off of the road for a
mere second, a mistake commonly made by people from all age groups,
at any time of day. Simply being more observant and paying attention
at all times could prevent the majority of fatalities that occur on a
daily basis. A modern society like the one of the present is
detrimental to driving safely. Many people can be seen on their
phones answering texts, answering calls, and even scrolling through
social media while driving. Growing up in a small town, traveling was
almost a necessity in order to have fun. Driving along Interstate 10,
one of the busiest interstate highways, I have seen many accidents
caused by someone not driving safely. Drivers speeding down wet roads
can be fatal, texting and driving can turn what would be a small dent
in someone’s bumper into severe injuries, expensive hospital bills,
and death. Seeing friends drive irresponsibly upsets me, because no
one ever thinks they will have a bad car accident. One of my close
friends recently had a car accident because she was not paying close
enough attention to the drivers around her. As she went to turn left,
a car crashed into her driver’s side. The police officers told her
if the car that had hit her had been any larger, she could have been
severely injured, or even killed. Earlier in the year, as I was
waiting at a stop sign, a vehicle that was heading North turned left
in front of one heading South. The vehicle that turned left was hit
by the one going South, and both vehicles almost slid into mine,
missing my car by a few inches. Although everyone in both situations
turned out with minimal injuries, if any, everyone involved was
shaken up by the events. To become a better driver, I can be more
attentive to the road and the other drivers on it. My advice to any
driver is to pay the closest attention possible to your surroundings,
people on all sides of you, people waiting at stop signs or traffic
lights, and never taking your eyes off of the road and other drivers.
