Driving
on the open road is one of the first times an individual begins to
feel a sense of freedom. An endless amount of possibilities opens up
as people begin to drive to locations they originally had their
parents drive them to. They can now venture out to hangout with
friends without having to get a ride (with their parents’
permission of course). An individual can now venture past locations
they have grown accustomed to their whole life and begin a new
chapter of their life. This illusion is shattered by the dangerous
reality that is driving.

It
has become a well-known fact that driving under influence has taken
the lives of many. There are statistics that prove that the amount of
deaths per year to driving accidents rivals death tolls in wars. Such
a reality should never be the case, and something needs to be done to
better educate the youth to prevent large amounts of casualties in
the future.

The
driving accidents issue stems from the education of driving safety.
When obtaining a permit, most people go about the test as just a
quick quiz that can be studied for the night before. It is common
practice among teenagers to simply download the app for the exam and
repeatedly retake the permit exam until you consistently obtain a 100
the day before the exam. Once you pass and obtain the permit, the
information you had learned can now be forgotten as you will no
longer need it. You will never have to take it again, no one checks
if you know which way you look at an intersection.

What
needs to be done is simple. Have people retake the exam again for the
driver’s test is a start, but the exam itself should be reformed.
When people turn fifty, insurance companies offer a discount if the
individual takes an exam that explores driving accidents
specifically. It helps give the individual taking the test a certain
perspective on how serious driving needs to be taken. This set up
should be implemented in the permit exam. It would give a more
serious tone behind the exam and demonstrate to the youth that
driving needs to be taken seriously.

Driving
accidents take one person’s mistake to occur, and in order to
prevent such accidents in the future, an improvement on the current
education for teenagers to become more aware of the dangers of
driving is necessary to decrease the rate of driving accidents.
