Why Drivers Ed is Important

The
reason that it is imperative that we take drivers ed is that
it gives drivers a firm understanding of the rules of the road. As
well as giving drivers an understanding of how their vehicle works
and should operate. If we did not take drivers ed courses,
whenever we are at an intersection or stoplight with multiple cars,
we would have to play a guessing game as to when we should drive or
wait. This random guessing would have an increase in the likelihood
that someone would get killed because of miscommunication or poor
judgment. Accidents could also occur from a lack of knowledge on how
to operate or maintain a vehicle. For instance, a car’s engine could
break down in the middle of a highway if the owners do not know when
or how to perform maintenance on the vehicle. This would endanger the
vehicle owner and everyone else on the highway as they have to
circumnavigate around the broken-down vehicle. The role of driver’s
education is to make sure that everyone understands the rules of the
road and to set guidelines for what to do under any circumstances
that the driver may find themselves in.

Some
of the steps that can be used to become a better driver and to reduce
the likelihood of accidents occurring are to minimize distractions
like the radio, texting, eating, or talking. It has been estimated
that over 3 thousand people a year in the U.S. alone have died to
these causes (Andrew). If we eliminate these causes of accidents
driving would be much safer for not only the individual driver but
for everyone else around them. Another thing that drivers should do
is to make sure they are in a state fit to drive. Meaning that they
should avoid driving while they are tired or emotionally unstable,
i.e., angry. People in these conditions will have reduced reaction
times and may not be in the best ability to assess any new situation
they encounter, endangering both the driver and everyone around them.
And perhaps most importantly, drivers should also keep up to date
with the latest information about traffic laws and review old ones as
well.

In
my personal experience my mother has occasionally driven
irresponsibly when she used her phone to pull up maps while driving
on the road. This brought a distraction to her that could have caused
an accident to occur and people dying. Luckily we have not had such
an accident occur but we could reduce the amount of distraction it
causes her, the driver, by either pulling up the map beforehand or
have someone be a navigator give her the directions as she is
driving.

Utilizing
these methods and participating in drivers ed, my family and I
have been able to avoid accidents and be safe driving on the road.
