The Impact Driving Has on Students
Driver
education is one of the most important skills for students to learn
as they take on the risk of driving. The privilege of driving
is an extremely large responsibility, and it should not be taken
lightly. Education in driving is important because there are many
risks involved in driving. Drivers need to learn to be safe, so
that irresponsibility does not become an issue on the road. Driver’s
safety education should be taken seriously in order to reduce the
risks of deaths as a result of driving.
There
are many steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of driving
related deaths. Students getting ready to begin driving should
be taking a written class as well as some type of on road lessons.
In Pennsylvania, the law before getting your driver’s license is to
have driven 65 hours; ten at night and five in bad weather.
Although this is the law, it is not put in place as strictly as it
should be. I believe people going to get their license should have to
give proof that they have taken the required time to practice
driving. I think that the driving test in general should be
taken more seriously. If the test is longer and has more challenges,
students will be more prepared when they begin driving.
Recently,
there have been multiple accidents around my area involving some of
my friends. Two of my closest friends were in an accident last
December. The girl driving was a new driver and she pulled up to an
intersection that was hard to see. She was not very familiar
with the intersection and thought that it was a four-way stop, but it
was a two-way stop. She pulled out too early and got hit by the car
driving perpendicular to her. The car went spinning into a
pole. This was an extremely bad accident, but luckily nobody was
injured in the accident. The fact that she did not know the
difference between a two and four way stop shows that she did not
have enough experience before beginning to drive. Another one
of my friends was snapchatting while driving. This did not result in
any crash, but my friends and I came together to tell her to stop
driving irresponsibly and start paying more attention. Being on the
phone can be a big distraction to drivers and should not be taken
lightly. I was also in an accident that did not result in any
injury, but it was extremely scary for me. I had taken my inhaler
after baton practice and on my way home my heart rate elevated too
high. It then dropped excessively causing me to pass out. I side
swiped a pole. I was in shock after the accident, but I now know that
I need to listen to my body before beginning to drive. To
create safer roads, we need to take action to teach students to be
responsible while driving.
