Attention! Keep Your Focus on the Road, Not on Your Phone

Driving
a motor vehicle is one of the most dangerous tasks we as humans
perform on a daily basis. However, it has been made almost completely
necessary by modern society. This means that both drivers and
passengers have to take precautions to prevent accidents on the road.
One of the most important things someone can do while driving is keep
their eyes on the road and both hands on the steering wheel. No
matter how skilled someone thinks they are, there are many things
outside of their control while driving, and it is best to try and
control all that they possibly can to prevent injuries or deaths.
Using your phone to do anything, even change the song you’re
listening to, can result in a life-changing event that could have
been easily prevented. Passengers should do all that they can to not
distract the driver and make sure the driver’s eyes stay on the
road.

Keeping
their attention on the road is one of the most important steps a
person can take to help reduce the number of driving-related deaths,
but there are many others. To prevent an accident, drivers should do
things such as not eating or drinking while driving, staying under
the speed limit, and not driving while emotionally impaired or under
the influence of mood-altering substances. Furthermore, educating
drivers about the steps needed to stay safe on the road is extremely
important. If drivers are aware of the dangers of the road, they can
do more to stay safe while driving and help other motor vehicle users
stay safe as well. Everyone on the road will be safer if more people
are educated about how to properly drive.

I
have been a passenger during two small car accidents within the past
ten years. Luckily, I was not harmed during either accident, but I am
afraid that someone I know is going to get into an accident and get
hurt. Both of my parents and many of my friends are reckless drivers.
They regularly drive distracted and go over the speed limit. I
consider myself extremely fortunate to have never been involved in a
major motor vehicle accident, but other people in my area have been
and it changed their life forever. One of my classmates was in a
major car accident that left him hospitalized for 7 months. He missed
almost the entire school year, and he’s still struggling to catch
up to his peers both academically and physically. His experience is
just one reason among thousands supporting why people should be
educated about proper driving safety. As I am a high school senior, I
know many people who would benefit from driving safety education. I
am going to work on focusing on the road while I am driving and
making sure that my parents and friends are driving safely when I am
with them.
