Safe Driving
Drivers ed
can help reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving, because
it teaches the students the rights and wrong of driving. This may
seem very basic, but it’s true. I would have never known the stuff
about driving that I do without the drivers ed course I took.
I also think it “scares” students into making right decisions.
Every time I was in that classroom, all the lessons impacted me. I
was afraid of what I was capable of behind the wheel, and because of
that I try to be the safest driver I can be.
I think a major
step that needs to be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is having people retake their learners permit test, and even
their drivers test. I know this will take a lot of time and effort,
but it could greatly decrease the amount of deaths due to driving.
With people having to retake these tests, they’re going to have to
keep up with new laws or reforms and refresh their minds of the old
ones they may have forgotten. I also think it’s important to show
people real-life scenarios. I know those always impacted me the
most. It was gut wrenching to hear those people’s stories and see
what they had to go through. People’s empathy-side starts to kick
in, and they want to do things that can stop those scenarios from
happening again.
I have gotten into
a car accident before. It was a rainy day and my car went off the
road into a tree. It was terrifying. To this day I still have an
issue going down that same road. I even get scared when it’s
raining or storming. I don’t think people realize how traumatizing
and detrimental a car accident can be until they’re in one. I have
seen friends or family members driving irresponsibly. I know quite a
few people who text and drive. I’m a big advocate for this. I
don’t even think phones should be on when you’re driving. I
always intervene and tell people to stop, especially if I’m in the
car with them. My life shouldn’t be at risk just because they
don’t know how to drive safely.
One step I can take
to becoming a better and safer driver is being sure to buckle up and
stay off my phone. These seem like simple things but can actually be
quite hard for some people. I could also follow the speed. I always
hear my friends talking about how you’re supposed to drive 10 OVER
the speed limit. But that’s not the case. You should actually be
driving 5 miles UNDER. I can help others become safer on the road by
reminding them about the rules and regulations. Like I said above,
real-life scenarios always hit deep (and are more engaging). So,
maybe sending them a video that shows safe driving or talks about it
would be effective.
