Take the Driving Detour: Preventing Future Collisions

Informing drivers as well as future drivers of drivers ed is crucial for the future of our world. Whether it be something simple such as not being on your phone while driving, or something more serious such as experiencing someone you care about getting in a serious accident due to driving. Drivers of all ages needs to be alerted of the tragic deaths involved with cars since many people have lost people, they truly care about due to something that could have been easily prevented like putting a phone down. By informing drivers it could give them insight and make them think about their actions before doing something such as not paying attention while on the road or even use their blinkers while turning. Now being alerted of all this information could be a great deal for one to take in at one time, so we can develop some levels or steps to get this knowledge out to the driver.

Some steps that could be taken into reducing the number of deaths would be to have specific classes in high schools on driving. There is a drivers ed course that people do need to pay for, and it helps students get practice with their driving and gains experience for them as well, but how well does it really teach them? Having a certain class on driving and the dangers of the road could help those young students understand the importance of the “open road” and what they could expect and/or prevent. For those already on the road and have been driving for awhile now, a step to consider is have an app/reminder for the driver to ensure they are following protocol for the road before starting to drive. People can get notifications when they turn their car on from their phone, smart watch, or even car which can have a checklist that displays what needs to be done like fastening their seatbelt, having their phone out of reach, and even a subtle reminder of those affected in car accidents every so often.

Luckily for me I have not been, nor am aware of anyone who has been involved with a car accident. The worst thing I saw was a car accident happen in front of my eyes before heading to work one morning and I can say it was the scariest thing I have ever seen to this day. For my friends though I notice they try and change the song from their phone while driving and I remind them every time to put their phone away since they are driving, or I ask them to let me change the song since their main focus should be on the road. With learning from these scenarios. some things I can change would be to put my phone in a place where I can’t reach in my car, so I won’t have to go and grab it and also do every task I need to do before I start driving.
