When Imagination Nudges Reality in the Right Direction

To Be or Not to Be”… a Decent Human Being

Shakespeare has a particular way with words, and, though it may take a while to understand their various meanings, Shakespeare words will resonate with each individual in the long run. Just as anyone may attempt an understanding at one of Shakespeare’s works, it doesn’t matter whether said driver is experienced or not, or young or old; everyone can benefit from drivers ed. Understanding the laws of driving contributes to all the other drivers around one’s vehicle, keeping everyone around him or her much more comfortable since they are aware of when to merge into a lane or give up your right-of-way. For example, completely comprehending one’s capability of right-of-way may prevent an accident where a vehicle on the left of an intersection turns instead of giving the vehicle to their right this privilege. Furthermore, it could be helpful for a student in drivers ed to be exposed to the importance of their avoiding alcohol, devices, and distractions while driving. For instance, understanding this importance may lead a driver to turning on their Do Not Disturb settings on their phones while driving or telling friends in advance of leaving the house how they will be avoiding alcohol that evening. Just like learning Shakespeare requires building on prior skills and developing new ones, learning to be a safer and more respectful driver requires a certain amount of effort.

Currently, I am pursuing a driver’s license, studying the books, and getting prepared to become both an experienced and a safe driver. As a young child, I witnessed by mother driving as she was an inexperienced and reckless driver herself. I sat in my carseat, a bystander to the many traffic stops and awkward conversations with police officers. Over the years, my mother has grown into her experience as a driver, driving significantly slower and frequently checking her surroundings to ensure optimal safety for both those inside her own car and those surrounding it. As I learn how to be a driver myself, I can only help to take similar steps; driving within the speed limit, checking my surroundings often, and limiting my distractions can save lives. These days, all I want “To be…” is a decent human being, and being a safe driver is the perfect way to do that.
