Steering to Safety

New drivers must be educated on safe driving protocols. Experienced drivers like friends and family may know the ins and outs of the road, however they cannot provide the same help that a formal education can. Drivers ed will make sure new drivers are up to date on road laws, protocol, safety measures, and new tips to navigate the road.

To reduce the number of deaths, drivers ed should be mandatory. Many people choose to get their learner’s permit upon turning 18. Being 18 allows them to bypass the driving instructor period However, having a driving instructor is beneficial as those close to them cannot teach the same way as a formal instructor can. Drivers ed was once a class taught in high school, but has been removed due to budget cuts. The class should be reinstated, as more people are learning how to drive in high school. This would allow the student to complete their high school education and learn safe driving in one convenient location.

I’ve never had an experience of being in a car accident. My friends and family members are responsible drivers. I trust that I’ll be safe in their vehicle. However, there is always room to improve and ensure safety.

To become a better driver I can work on maintaining focus on the road, and lessening distractions in the car. I will avoid listening to loud, high intensity music, as I may end up focusing on the song more than the road. Too much focus on the conversation may distract the drivers from the road. Simply alerting my passengers of this risk will allow them to choose to not converse with me during driving, or to only have light conversation or small talk. Turning my phone on silent and placing it away from my reach, I’ll prevent distracted driving through texting. I’ll also avoid drinking if I know I’ll be driving.

To help others be safer drivers, I can become a more responsible passenger. I am a sociable person, however demanding conversation from a driver can be very dangerous. I plan to discuss less, or only discuss simple things that demand less attention from them. I also will help keep drivers in check. I won’t let someone drive me if I know they’re intoxicated or if the weather is poor. I’ll also work on focusing on the road. providing a second eye. By keeping myself in check, I can improve as a driver and protect the people in my car. Demanding accountability from myself provides motivation to work towards safety.

Many youth are excited to begin driving, the thrill of the road and being in control pumps adrenaline through their veins. However, because of the rush, they may forget to look out for their own safety. Their confidence being the most deadly trait. Believing they are above in skill and tact is a recipe for disaster. Life is precious; you can make thousands of risks, but you only live once.
