What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving? Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly? What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?

(500 words)

Promoting driver education can greatly decrease the number of deaths as a result of driving. Teaching people to drive safer and becoming more of a defensive driver will make everyone else at a lower risk of an accident. Deaths from car accidents mainly come from reckless driving, whether it be speeding around or under the influence. A great first step could be to really put in people’s heads that cars are giant hunks of metal that can kill other people. One driver literally has the other drivers’ lives and their passengers’ lives in their hands, one wrong jerk in the wrong direction on a busy highway can cause multiple cars to slam into each other resulting in serious injuries or even death. Just putting those images in someone’s mind could persuade them to become a more safe driver, telling one story or sharing the smallest details of information can change someone’s life forever. Another way to present this to people is to tell a real story, bring someone in that really has been in a car accident and say that people in cars aren’t invincible, accidents do happen. No one expects an accident, that is why it is called an accident. A big step forward for safer driving is better technology for cars, promoting newer and affordable cars that have extra sensors and reminders about how close other cars are and if there is anyone in blind spots. Not only researching these and offering these technologies will be enough, but actually making it affordable because not everyone will be able to afford the latest and greatest safety cautions on an already expensive car. Reducing the price for safety would increase the overall safety for everyone on the road. I understand that car manufacturers want their profits, but it wouldn’t be so profitable if people driving their cars get seriously injured or died in their cars, it would only put their name in a bad light and negatively reflect upon them. It would also be much better if they make their cars more affordable for the overall masses because the companies wouldn’t want people to die, which would be a huge source of income. I’ve been in a minor car accident, I was with my dad on our way to school and the traffic was so bad that we kept stopping after only rolling a couple of feet. The young woman behind us was on her phone and rolled a little too far and hit our car. Fortunately, my dad turned to put his arm over me to protect me and I only got a little whiplash. Unfortunately, when he turned the car hit at the same time and he ended up permanently hurting his back. It may have seemed like a minor accident, but my dad permanently hurt his back that day and since then had a big impact on our family life. He can lift heavy things from the ground, only if he pushes himself to his limit and fights the pain, we tell him not to but he is just prideful and stubborn. Most of the time now, I have to pick things up for him, I do not mind, but I imagine how differently things would be if he didn’t get hurt. He cannot play sports for a very long time either, running, twisting, and other strenuous movements will wear out his back. He’s gotten two injections to try and numb the nerves, but spasms always come back. His back got messed up just because of a little accident because someone wasn’t paying attention a second too long. I could stay away from my phone to prevent an accident and pay attention to the road more, to prevent an accident like what had happened to us. I understand since then the impact of what could happen if I mess up one time while driving, maybe I’m going a little faster and react a little too late, how badly would the injuries on someone else be? Taking all these steps to avoid another injury and teaching it to others I know would increase the safety of the roads.
