My
summer vacation will be spent volunteering at the Fresh Resource
Institute as an introductory internship to gain some experience in
the major that I’ve decided to declare as, which is Ecology and
Biology. I’ll be driving myself to the water-ways myself but there
will be times people will ride with me. I have a friend who was in a
serious car crash, and I tell everyone who rides with me I have three
rules. One, No one should be texting or watching videos in the front
drivers or passengers side seats. Two, the music cannot be too loud
that I cannot hear ambulance and police sirens in route to an
emergency. Three, there is no drinks allowed in my car except water.
I feel that by following these three expectations that my friend has
lived by, it will help me be the safest driver possible. I’ll also
be much more selective when I start college this fall about vehicles
I get into. Making sure the drivers of those vehicles are safe,
don’t take their attention for granted, and don’t allow
passengers to distract them in route to a destination.

I
have a lot of plans this summer and I want to arrive safely to all my
volunteer, college class and lab obligations, as well as my two
part-time jobs.

I’ve
conducted over a dozen community service projects working with
naturalists and conservationists. I’m hoping to work for a company
or the D.E.P. to make sure chemicals are processed safely and that
there’s a sustainability plan. In scouts we’ve worked on the
Susquehanna and Schuylkill Rivers and many creeks/streams studying
aquatic life and their ecosystems.

As
an Eagle Scout, I’ve wanted to serve others and be considered a
person people could count on. I’m resolved to be a servant-leader
in my community and make good choices when you live by the Scout Oath
and Law.

I’ve
learned much of my leadership and public speaking skills by being
active with local servant leader groups like the Lions, Elks, Borough
Council, and Reliance Fire Station. I give of myself and have done
so for a couple weekends a month with my family since before I was in
elementary school. I’ve had amazing experiences helping others from
clothing and food drives, to community project fundraisers for our
community pool, teen center, recreation association, soup kitchen,
and veterans programs. I’ve led dozens of servant leadership
projects as Troop SPL and Crew President to benefit families.

The
most significant accomplishments during high school was over a period
of two years where I worked with first responders and their families
to learn about their experiences and how to help people all over the
country heal from the terrorist attack on “9/11.” In the
end I led a team who constructed a beautiful 9/11 Memorial in my
hometown in front of our oldest fire hall.

To
construct the memorial I traveled to the New York/ New Jersey Port
Authority representatives to receive over a dozen steel artifacts of
the former Twin Towers. I held multiple fundraisers just to acquire
I-beams, concrete and welding supplies to feature these artifacts
commemorating the former World Trade Center towers. A black granite
monument was placed in front of the sculpture dedicated to first
responders who died in the attacks and those who carry on today. I
held a dedication ceremony after construction was finished and I’ve
worked with the fire hall since to emcee annual remembrance events.

My
leadership capabilities have grown significantly through high school.
I used to be afraid to make mistakes and risk letting someone down.
Through encouragement of my scout leaders I’ve worked through my
fears, practiced working through challenges and have much more
confidence to do my best.

These
attributes have helped lead me to be named a model employee at our
local nursing home, and, engaging with others in an empathetic
manner. I appreciate what it takes to lead by not only taking
responsibility to help others as well as accepting help when offered.
My most memorable learning experiences have been learning while I
embrace the gift of feedback.

Thank
you for the opportunity to apply to this scholarship.
