Driver’s Safety Initiative

Driver’s Safety Initiative

A three second google search indicates why driver’s education and safety on roadways is imperative for all motorists. 1.35 million people die per year on our nation’s roadways, that means on average 3,700 people die on the roadways every single day. 20-50 million people are suffering with long term disabilities that will never be fixed. If that doesn’t prove that we need drivers to be safe, nothing else will. Don’t be a statistic, drive safely!

We need driver’s education to keep all those who use these roadways. Obviously, laws are in place to enforce these rules, but there is still a long way to go before we are completely safe on the roadways. An idea for making the roadways safer is to enforce a second drivers test. The more time that passes between a driver and their test, the more they forget (or ignore) rules about shoulder checking, fully coming to a stop at signs, and putting their hands at 10 and 2. Having a second drivers test would ensure that motorists remember the rules. Hopefully, it will allow a safer driving experience for our roadways.

Obviously, young drivers are known to be reckless. While they know the rules, they have new found freedom that fuels them. My peers are not exempt to this, and have driven recklessly. To combat this, maybe a “lock” could be initiated so that teens could not use their phones other than to call for emergencies. When the car stops, it could unlock. Another idea is having a max speed put on the cars, so they will not go higher than the specified speed limit on certain roads. Technology is advancing, and these new ideas would not be out of reach in this ever changing world.

In my own life, people driving recklessly is not uncommon. Living in a small town, teenagers frequently go out just to drive around. I can definitely use myself as an example to others, and lead by action. The other thing I can do, is not participate in it. Reckless driving and car accidents are extremely scary. One of my close friend’s brother died in a crash about a year ago. If I can find the courage to stand up and insist on going slow, lives might be saved. While it is hard to go against a group of friends, it is something that needs to be done to keep us all as safe as they can be.

Roadways are not safe. No doubt about it. They can be made safer by technology, and implementing new ideas. Google can tell us that much, but it starts with people who want to get to their destination safely, and not end up as a statistic.
