Let The Game Begin!

Driver’s education is critical in creating safe, well-informed motorists that know the laws of the roads they travel and the rules of operating a motor vehicle.

By providing opportunities for unskilled or unlicensed drivers to take advantage of driver’s education courses, a community is making the roads safer. Drivers that enroll in such programs are given the know-how to make safe, defensive-driving decisions quickly- such as knowing how to drive in the rain, when to step and hold the brakes, and how to swerve to avoid debris in the road.

Along with the knowledge that comes with a driver’s course, learners also get to experience driving with an experienced teacher in the passenger seat. They get to travel the roads with play-by-play coaching such as pre-game preparations like adjusting the seat and mirrors, clicking the seat belt, when to sound the buzzer (horn) and knowing the position of both hands on the wheel, AND really important is keeping illegal equipment off of the court. In other words, there is no room for a cell phone or other foul items such as make-up anywhere near the driver. By keeping this and other distractions out of the reach of the driver, we can help reduce the number of senseless accidents and or fatalities that can result from distracted drivers that tend to take their eyes off of the road. In the event of a dead end road, a coach can explain how to make a three-point U turn without ever getting off of the road. Imagine how cool that was! The other unbelievable feat that can be accomplished by taking a course with a skilled professional is learning how to parallel park one reverse and one pull up. That in itself is like winning an MVP trophy during a basketball tournament. It definitely merits bragging rights and a t-shirt!

Once the game clock starts and the player (driver) moves onto the streets, it is time to scan your surroundings and know where the predators are. An instructor is able to tell the driver how to maneuver safely from one lane to another using blinkers. They can guide the learner to the next play showing them how to read road signs, signal lights, all the while making sure to stay inbounds by avoiding the solid yellow or white lines. The experience a developing driver gets is priceless. It allows new drivers to learn how to survive in the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic as well as how to get the most out of a leisurely Sunday drive.

Ultimately, a driver’s education course is able to prepare new drivers with the knowledge and skills to avoid collisions since they will surely learn about recommended speeds, the importance creeping through school zones, how to keep safe following distances, and how to avoid rear-end collisions- which in Texas are the fault of the rear-ender and not the UberEats driver that is lost and decides to stop in the middle of a busy curvy road to look at her cell phone map with no brake or emergency lights to warn other drivers. True story! Such a course will surely put a less anxious, more confident and skilled driver out on the beautiful roads which will contribute to a safer community for everyone around, making it a win-win situation for all involved in the game!
