To Save a Life

Driving is a privilege that should never be abused. When driving, you are operating tons of machinery, and you are responsible for what happens when you are in that drivers seat. You simply cannot just take a test without studying, unless you are preparing to fail. You can’t just sit behind the wheel and have a handle on things. Without knowing how the car works or the rules of the road, you are putting yourself, and everyone around you, in danger.

My sister is an EMT, and has been on the scene of way too many car accidents. Most have been due to acclimate weather, but there are a few accidents that could have been prevented with either sobriety or just by simply putting their phone down. When intoxicated in any way, or overtired, you should stay in the passenger seat. Call a friend, family member, or an uber. When not sober or overtired, your reaction time is slower, no matter how fast your brain is going. This means that there is a higher chance of getting into an accident. When you are in your best state of mind, put your phone down. Whether it is in your back pocket, in a bag, or in the backseat, just don’t touch it. Not even at a stoplight or stop sign. If it is really important, pull over. Also, pay attention! Look at the signs, make sure you are watching out for pedestrians or animals, and to stay vigilant. Looking at the radio for too long also hinders your ability to drive safely. Keeping your eyes off the road for too long is dangerous. At any moment, something or someone could run out in front of you, or you are crossing the yellow or white line, due to distraction.

If you are following the rules of the road, it doesn’t mean you can really relax. You never know if the drivers in the cars around you are also paying attention and are in a good state of mind also. You always have to assume that the drivers around you aren’t paying attention, that way you are more prepared for a situation where they really aren’t. Drive defensively to stay safe. Here are some basic rules to remember:

-Keep your eyes on the road

-Follow the signs

-Drive sober and with a clear head

-Drive on the defense

Following the rules of the road is just as important as learning them. You have to take a permit test and a driving test to make sure that you are learning the rules of the road and practicing them correctly. You wouldn’t show up to the tests intoxicated, or whip out your phone in the middle of it. So why would you do it while alone? You are abusing your privilege of driving, and risking the lives of everyone around you, including yourself. So stop, keep your eyes on the road, read the signs, drive on the defense, and stay sober or call a friend.
