Making the Road a Safe Place for Others

Making the Road a Safe Place for Others

When it comes to reducing the number of deaths from driving, driver education is extremely important. Driver education teaches people (especially teenagers in high school) how driving is not something to be taken lightly. While driving, it is essential to be focused and alert because you never know what you could encounter on the road (whether it be an animal, child, or the weather). Teaching others about the proper way to drive is the number one way in avoiding driving-related deaths and injuries.

Driver education is the first step to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. It teaches people what to do and what not to do while on the road (and what to look out for). Whether it’s done through a school or other separate resources, taking a driver education class is always a good idea. But the second, and maybe most important step, is to catch mistakes on the road before they happen. For example, if you’re driving, and you notice yourself getting distracted by notifications from your phone, pull over on the side of the road and shut off your phone or put in it a place that is out-of-reach. Doing this can help prevent a possible crash, injury, or death. Noticing mistakes before they happen is key in protecting yourself and others on the road. The third and final step in reducing driving-related deaths is to pay attention while driving. It sounds like the simplest step, yet it is the one that most people forget. The number one way to follow this step is to limit as many distractions as possible. Whether it be the radio, your phone, or even other people in the car. Focusing on what’s going on in front of you will lead to fewer collisions and fewer deaths.

Personally, I have been in a situation where I have seen one of my friends drive irresponsibly. Although we did not get into a car crash, there was a chance that we could’ve. I was sitting in the passenger seat, and my friend was driving. At the time, I didn’t have my license, so my friend was helping me out by giving me a ride. We were on the highway, and they were going 10 mph over the speed limit. I thought it was a little too fast, since I’ve always been told to never go above 5 mph over the speed limit. I asked my friend if they could go a little slower, since I didn’t feel completely safe going that fast. They understood, and gradually slowed down. Now, since I have my license, I’m always careful to go at a reasonable speed on the highway.

In my opinion, one of the best ways to become a better driver is through practice. Driving with a licensed adult who is more experienced is a great way to learn since they can offer you advice and tips on how to better your driving. Just because someone has a driving permit or license, it doesn’t mean they’re an expert driver. Even if you have a license, it’s still a good idea to drive with an adult in the car occasionally. And the best way to help others become safer drivers is by giving advice on how they can improve their driving even further. Even if you’re not an official driving instructor, you can still give tips and recommendations. By doing this, you’re making the road a safer place for everyone.
