DMV/EDU scholarship essay

Getting behind the wheel as a teenager can be terrifying if you are not prepared. Luckily, states require new teen drivers to participate in a driver’s education program to educate them before they get behind the wheel. Then, they participate in driving hours to get practice with their new skills with an expert to guide them. This keeps the students and other drivers on the road safe. Driver’s education programs are important in reducing the number of deaths as a result of teen driving.

In driver education, students see firsthand the importance of taking driving seriously in order to keep everyone safe. For example, they show a video of a student texting and driving and just how many signs the student misses and what can happen as a result. In the video, the student is distracted and in just a split second, the student’s life and the life of another driver are drastically altered. Also in driver’s education, you get to know and understand the rules and procedures for driving. The right way. It is easy to pick up bad habits from family members who have been driving for a long time. Being in driver’s education, allows students to truly know and understand the correct way of doing things.

When I first started driving, my family and I set up expectations and rules for driving. I only drove in places I was familiar with as I got accustomed to driving. I also was only allow to have one passenger at a time to avoid distractions. I also had to put my cell phone in the glove box to make sure I wouldn’t be tempted to look at it while driving, These small things were necessary as I got used to driving and I would recommend them to all new drivers on the road.

I got a real scare one day when I was driving to school. As I was making the 8 mile drive to school, like I always do, a deer jumped out in front of my car. I had to act quickly and remain as calm as I could in order to avoid an accident. Luckily, I noticed the deer because I was not distracted. I was able to quickly stop and avoid both the deer and the other oncoming car. After coming to a stop, I was able to honk to get the deer to run away to avoid any other potential issues. Had I not been watching carefully, there would have been an accident and people and an animal could have been seriously hurt.

Driving is an important responsibility that many students take for granted. Driving is a commitment that requires time to fully understand and practice the skills needed. This is why driver’s education programs are necessary. They teacher new drivers the rules of the road. Once obtaining a driving license, it is important to remember those skills to keep yourself and others safe while on the road. This will reduce the number of deaths as a result of teen driving.
