How to Make Our Roads Safer

When we are born we don’t know how to walk or talk, but we are taught and soon things like this become second nature. The same is with driving. We have to be carefully taught how to drive so that one day it too will become second nature. Taking drivers education will help us to become safer and better drivers. Driver education teaches you how to take things step by step so that you will be able to learn. Because we are able to learn this way, we are able to understand the dangers of driving, and how to prevent them.

When we are first introduced to driving in the Drivers ed class, we are shown a lot of scary real live videos of bad accidents happening to good people. The purpose of these videos are to scare us because when we are driving a 4,000 pound piece of metal going 60 mph and the only thing between life and death are the choices we make, it is scary. This is not meant to make us not want to drive though, it is just very important to know the dangers of driving. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong and we just need to know how to best prevent this. The drivers education helps us to know how to drive safely and how to keep others safe as well.

When people get so good at doing something, they tend to pay less attention to what they are doing. This is what causes accidents. People are alway busy nowadays that they think that it is ok to get ready or eat while driving, but it has been proven that humans are not capable of fully multitasking. There are also many other distractions that are around us, like the little computer you always have in your pocket. 1 out of every 4 accidents are caused by texting and driving in the US. So how do we stop this? First, don’t be on your phone! If the sound of notifications or calls distract you, then put your phone on silent. Ask yourself, do you really think one small text is worth someone’s life, including yours? When you are in the car, if you really need to call or text, pull over. If you do this you could save someone’s life. When you are driving it is important to never lose attention, never.

I have never been in an accident before, but I have seen a few happen. My mother was taking my brother and cousin home one day from a play date. It was a very normal drive, when my mother stopped at a red light the car behind her was not paying attention and rear ended her. She was driving a truck while the car behind her was a lot smaller. The car that rear ended her got crunched and probably could not be fixed. It was because of that driver not paying attention to the cars stopping at the red light there was an accident. No one was hurt in this and it was not too severe, but it could be. This is why we always need to be careful.

We can be safer while driving if we are not distracted or driving recklessly. We need to learn to put away phones and other distractions. When we do that, then everyone will be able to go home.
