The Importance of Drivers Education

Every day, we see too many car accidents and too many deaths from them. Many accidents occur because of inexperienced drivers and distracted drivers. Some do not realize the danger of distracted driving. That is why we have driver’s education classes; to teach drivers how to be safe on the road.

Drivers education is very important for drivers, especially young drivers. We tend to think that we are invincible and that nothing will happen to us but that is not true. Drivers education courses help to inform new drivers of all the risks of driving and how to stay safe while

driving. They teach you to not use your phone not only when you are driving,

but when you are at a stoplight, a stop sign, or any pause in your driving. They also teach you the dangers of drinking and driving, driving while tired, etc. Taking drivers education courses can reduce the numbers of deaths caused by driving. In order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, the biggest thing teens could do is stop using their phones. Almost every teenager has a phone and everybody knows that we love to use them. Many people cannot let go of their phones for even five minutes. You should put your phone on “do not disturb” mode while taking a commute. Distracted driving is the most common reason that teenagers and young adults get into car accidents. We can also reduce deaths related to driving by driving the speed limit. A lot of teenagers have a need for speed. They get a new car, and they have the desire to see how fast the vehicle can go but in reality, they are creating a higher chance of causing a car accident.

I have been in one minor car accident and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. I had always told myself, even before I got my license, that I would be an amazing driver and never get into a car accident. Although the accident was not my fault, I wondered if it really was. Even though I was a good driver and paid attention all the time, I think that being in the accident made me more aware. I think all accidents in a way, serve as a “wake-up call” for people. They cause you to drive more carefully and make you more alert.

To be a safer driver, I should not be too comfortable driving. I should always stay alert and if I am tired, I should not be the one driving. To help others be safe on the road, I can be on the lookout while they are driving, have minimal conversation, and hold them accountable for unsafe driving such as doing makeup at a stoplight, checking a text, etc. If we all try to help each other drive safer, deaths caused by driving can be greatly reduced.
