Steering A Generation Towards Responsible Driving

The teenage years always evoke excitement for various reasons. It’s the incredible coming-of-age feeling swelling inside an adolescent as they begin to visualize the many freedoms that come their way. Whether it be dating, having a later curfew, or getting a job, the teenage years motivates adolescents to seek new experiences. One of the most exhilarating experiences of the teenage years is learning how to drive. Getting a driver’s licence is a step towards teen independence. However, driving is a privilege, not a luxury and teenagers must grasp the importance of responsible driving habits to keep themselves and others safe on the road.

Driver’s education provides individuals with the fundamentals of responsible driving. In this course, individuals will learn traffic signals, vehicle control, operating a vehicle in inclimate weather, operating a vehicle at night and many other vital lessons. Teens are less likely to be involved in vehicular accidents because of the laws and regulations they will learn in this course. Driver’s Ed reviews local driving laws and asks questions about scenarios that driver’s might encounter while on the road. Additionally, driver’s ed lays out the risks and consequences of irresponsible driving habits. Completing a driver’s education course prior to receiving a permit or license will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed for responsible and safe vehicle operation.

In order to increase vehicle safety and decrease vehicular fatalities, many precautions can be taken. One important precaution is eliminating phone use while operating the vehicle. Many individuals feel that they are extremely capable of multitasking on the road, however, this is an incredibly dangerous act that most individuals cannot master. Cell phones should not be used while driving due to the simple fact that individuals are taking their eyes off of the road, therefore losing all focus. Another important precaution is staying off the roads if intoxicated. Intoxication has a profound effect on the brain and causes individuals to lose control of their mental processes. Driving requires full attention and cognisance as individuals maneuver the roads and watch for other drivers. If an individual chooses to drink alcohol or use narcotics, they should have a designated driver or wait before navigating the roads. These are just a few of the many precautions that should be taken while driving.

I have experienced a car accident before and have witnessed someone use bad driving habits. However, accidents can be prevented and bad driving habits can be eliminated if everyone makes an effort to drive responsibly. One step drivers can take to become better drivers ensuring the safety of other drivers is taking a defensive driving course. This course will help individuals learn how to react in various situations and to anticipate the actions of other drivers to prevent accidents.

Safe driving can save many lives. When an individual is operating a motor vehicle, they must drive responsibly regardless of how others choose to drive. Driving is an exciting yet dangerous experience, but following the proper regulations will ensure everyone’s safety.
