The Importance of Driver Education

The Importance of Driver Education

Driver education is an extremely important and beneficial program to go through, especially for high school students of driving age. It is great that driver education courses are being offered in most schools, but there is still a fair number of students who do not take advantage of the opportunity. Aside from this, some students do not take it seriously. Driver education doe well with preparing new drivers for the road. Learning road signs, discussing safe driving, and applying this knowledge plays a major role in keeping new and existing drivers safe. The more educated a driver is on appropriate driving behavior and traffic laws, the fewer the number of accidents or deaths will be caused as a result of poor driving practices.

Steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving may include: following traffic rules and regulations, participating in a driver education course, informing others on how they can drive more safely, and be cautious of drivers around you who may not be following traffic laws. Following traffic rules and regulations may seem like a no-brainer; however, so many people develop their own driving habits and often ignore road signs and traffic rules. Fortunately, I have not personally been involved in any car accidents. On the other hand, I have witnessed irresponsible driving by others more times than I can count. This often comes in the form of the aforementioned habits that are developed by drivers over time. For example, not completely stopping at stop signs, speeding up to drive through a yellow light, or driving without a seatbelt. These behaviors come all too comfortably to some people, and they just don’t realize how the tiniest irresponsible behavior could result in serious injury or death.

Steps that I can take to be a safer and better driver are to always be cautious of my own driving decisions as well as those of drivers around me. It is equally important to consider the decisions other drivers may make as some people appear to be doing one thing when they actually intend to do another. For example, looking both ways at an intersection a car may seem far away, but in reality, they are actually traveling at a speed much faster than it seems. Sitting at the stop sign just a few extra seconds to be cautious could prevent you from driving out onto the road too soon and getting into an accident. I can help others be safer drivers by sharing the knowledge I have about safe driving as well as helping them to practice safe driving whenever I am a passenger in their vehicle. Driver education is important in reducing the number of deaths related to driving because it is for most people the very first experience of traffic laws and on-the-road experience with driving.
