The Dangers of Driving and How to Fix It

Getting my driver’s license was one of the best days of my life. I went on my 16th birthday. I was so excited that day. My parents informed me about the dangers of driving, and so I have always been aware while I am driving, especially watching out for drivers who are reckless. Driving is a dangerous activity that many people do every day, therefore, they should be educated on how they can drive safer.

The importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is of the utmost importance. Many teenagers die each year in car accidents, which is a sad statistic to realize that you or one of your friends could join that rising number. Along with driver’s ed, it is also important that teenagers learn the risks on the road. Schools should implement a driver safety education course along with driver’s ed, to educate newly licensed teenagers about the dangers of driving, and how to best keep themselves safe on the road. If teenagers are educated about this subject early on in their driving career, the number of deaths related to automobile accidents should decrease.

There are a couple steps which can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. The first step is education before a teenager receives his or her permit. Creating a driver education program in the classroom during freshman year of high school would allow teenagers to get the essential safety information before they ever get into the driver’s seat. Another step to reduce the number of deaths is to more heavily enforce driving laws. If more people are getting pulled over and receiving tickets for bad driving behavior, this will influence teenagers to drive better because they know that the driving laws will be enforced.

I have fortunately not had the experience of being in a car accident. However, my dad was involved in a bad car accident where his car got totaled. Thankfully, he did not get injured. I have also had one of my friends get into a car accident this past summer. She explained it to me, and I was glad that she was unharmed, because the accident sounded bad. I have not seen my friends or family members drive irresponsibly, but I see many irresponsible drivers on the road every day. I have seen bad drivers of all ages, and I have seen cars almost get into a wreck.

There are a few steps which I can take to be a better and safer driver and help others become safer on the road. One step is that I could encourage everyone to leave early, so that they do not have to rush to get to his or her destination. I encourage people to have their phone turned on to “do not disturb” while they are driving. Something that I can do to become a better driver is to always be aware of my surroundings and the drivers around me.
