Becoming a Safe and Responsible Driver

Many people lose their lives every day due to accidents on U.S. highways and interstates. Driver’s education and emphasis on good habits while driving is key to preventing wrecks on the road.

Driver’s education plays a substantial role in decreasing the amount of deaths as a result of driving. Driver’s education heightens awareness of traffic rules and regulations, while urging drivers to take special care in maintaining a proper speed limit, wearing seat belts, using turn signals and headlights, and obeying traffic signals. Driver’s Education classes have made redirecting attention back to the road their leading priority. Driver’s Education saves countless lives each year as a result of educating American drivers.

Several actions can be taken to reduce the number of driving related accidents in the U.S.  A significant step is to emphasize that drivers should buckle up. Using a seat belt, especially in the event of a crash, keeps the driver and their passengers safe by securing them in their seat. Being ejected from a car as a result of not using a seat belt is typically fatal. Another widely known cause of car accidents is when an impaired driver gets behind the wheel, intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Making a point of being cautious with any impairing substance will help reduce the number of intoxicated drivers. Being alert and safe while driving on the road is essential to saving lives.

I have experienced times in my life when friends or family members have driven irresponsibly. One experience I had started when my friend and I came to the age where we could earn our driver’s license and could explore our new driving opportunity. I began to notice some reckless driving habits develop. Our phones gradually became a part of our driving routine, yet we had been warned against texting and driving before. Since then, we have abandoned the bad habit. Fortunately, my friend and I have never experienced a car accident.

A variety of good habits help drivers become safer, while encouraging others to be responsible behind the wheel as well. A major step towards this goal is to stay focused and alert while on the road. Another factor of driving safety includes being aware of your surroundings and other drivers, or defensive driving. For instance, if you anticipate a car changing lanes in front of you, reduce your speed to prevent an accident. Staying focused and alert while operating a vehicle will help you become a safer driver, while keeping yourself and others safe.

Being a responsible, educated driver reduces the number of deaths caused by driving accidents. Experienced, safe driving includes using safety devices within the car, practicing good habits, and being alert and aware of your surroundings.
