Drive Safe, Save Lives

In the unpredictable world that we live in, gaining knowledge is essential for minimizing the risks and maximizing moments of happiness. We can either gain knowledge through experience, or through teachings. Although experience can be a great teacher, when it comes to driving, mistakes often prove fatal. This is why drivers ed is the best way to prevent accidents on the road. Learning about the various dangers that drivers face while on the road and what can happen when caution is thrown to the wind may cause a young driver to think twice before picking up their phone while behind the wheel. A choice that will ultimately save lives.

To further reduce driving related deaths, we can continue to teach our young drivers. Many new drivers, myself included, feel a rush of freedom after earning their driver’s license. Simply put, a driver’s license doesn’t make you a great driver. A driver’s test can’t account for every situation one will face when on the road. Having an adult or experienced driver in the passenger seat for a few more months can prove to be life-saving. With an adult by their side, not only can the new driver continue to learn, they will also pick up good habits. Distractions such as loud music and cell phones will not be allowed under the supervision of an experienced driver. These habits will be strengthened and hopefully they will remain after the adult leaves the vehicle.

Driving is an act that requires your undivided attention at all times. Despite knowing this, I still struggle to resist the allure of my brand new stereo system. As childish as it may seem, as soon as the music begins to play throughout my vehicle, my brain shifts its attention towards the booming bass and catchy lyrics. Singing along to your favorite songs on a sunny day while the wind breezes through your hair is a magnificent feeling but it is also extremely dangerous. Perhaps even more dangerous is simply playing music at a great volume. The danger lies in how safe it seems. Similar to how studying becomes difficult in noisy areas, driving is also inhibited by loud music. Being unable to hear passing vehicles is one of many dangers that I have faced while behind the wheel.

The road is already full of hazards, driving distracted simply isn’t worth it. To limit my distractions, I first inform my passengers of the various safety rules. If they are not willing to oblige, I simply refuse to drive them. My biggest rule, besides seatbelts, is a volume limit on the music. Although this means we can no longer perform our version of carpool karaoke, I’m still satisfied because I believe that our lives are more important than one song.
