A Creative Solution to Distracted Driving

Distracted driving, specifically texting while driving, is a primary cause of accidents on the road. In order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, there is a simple step we can all take: spread awareness of the dangers of texting and driving. This will encourage people to take accountability for their own actions, as well as motivate them to combat this cause.

In some parts of the country, cell phone use in the car is completely banned. I believe that most people are aware of the dangers of texting and driving and are well informed of these laws, but in the moment, temptation gets the best of them. The driver is more focused on texting their friend back, than they are about their safety. Unfortunately, those who violate these laws often go unnoticed, because it is fairly easy to hide a phone. How do we solve this? Well, the easiest way is to eliminate the temptation. An effective solution would be to create a designated compartment in the car to stash your phone. Additionally, car companies could create an optional setting, where the driver will not be allowed to drive until their phone is in the compartment. Alternatively, the compartment could have a wireless charging pad inside. This invention would be beneficial for those who understand the dangers of texting and driving, but do not have the self-discipline to avoid their phone. Although this idea is not perfected, it’s a good starting point that, if advertised effectively, could be a life saving idea.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Using a cell phone while driving creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. In 2018 alone, 2,841 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Among those killed: 1,730 drivers, 605 passengers, 400 pedestrians and 77 bicyclists.” (https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-driving) Everyone should counter the issue of road safety differently, depending on their personal strengths. Personally, I can improve road safety by pondering solutions and spreading awareness. If everyone does their part to combat the issue of distracted driving, together, we can make a difference. Together, we can save lives.
