Drive as though your family is in the car with you at all times

Did
you know that an estimated 38,000 Americans die from car accidents
each year? What is interesting is that most of these accidents can be
avoided. Teaching both young and experienced drivers about driver
education can help reduce this number of people. We can reduce the
number of drivers that die by involving more legislation and
providing a safer variety of mobility options. Personally, I have
been in a moderately severe car accident and been to the funeral of a
person that died too young due to a car accident. By managing my
speed to a safe level and watching out for other drivers and
pedestrians, I can help attribute to making the roads safer for
others.

First,
drivers ed helps provide people the proper knowledge and skills
to operate a motor vehicle on the road. You will learn laws that will
help keep you safe and the drivers that share the road with you. For
example, laws that provide other drivers the designated right of way
ensures that the number of accidents at a residential intersection
will be reduced. Drivers ed also provides drivers that are the
most vulnerable to accidents (16-24-year old’s), proper road safety.

Next,
many steps can be taken to reduce the number of driving deaths that
occur on our roads. There are many existing laws and regulations that
already help with the reduction of motor vehicle deaths. For example,
laws that make driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt
illegal help reduce the curb. Enforcing these laws by enacting higher
penalties and fines is a good way to reduce road deaths. Also,
encouraging drivers to use safer modes of transit such as rapid
transit can also reduce road deaths. Studies have shown that people
who live in transit-oriented communities have about 20 percent the
crash casualty rate as people who live in automobile-oriented
communities.

Personally,
when I was 10, I was involved in a car accident on a family road trip
to Orlando, Florida. We were traveling on the highway when we had to
slow down for traffic, then suddenly a car hit us by trying to
quickly pass around us. This issue could have been avoided if the
driver followed the proper laws to bypass a driver on the road.
Furthermore, when I was 11, I attended the funeral of my brother’s
friend that died in a car accident. As I looked at him at the
viewing, I thought to myself how we could avoid tragedies like this
from happening.

Finally,
I am always taking steps to become a better driver and make our roads
safer for everyone. I make sure that my phone is silenced while I
drive so that I won’t be tempted to pick it up and cause an
accident. Out of generosity, I let drivers that wish to get come into
my lane get to do so. Making sure roads are safe is a great way for
me to contribute to reducing the number of vehicle deaths.
