Drive with Care
Driving
is one of the most common methods of transportation and yet there are
thousands of car related injuries or deaths occurring per year, which
is frightening once you become knowledgeable of how common it occurs.
Drivers ed is an important factor to reducing the number of
deaths that result from driving. If more drivers became educated in
road safety laws, they could be more cautious and vigilant during
their daily commutes. Although, the statistics for car related are
alarming at first, it could very well be the wake-up call drivers
need to help reduce those numbers. This data may take into account
the ones in the actual vehicles, but the number of loved ones that
are impacted because of the collisions is dozens of times more
concerning. Some steps that can reduce the number of car accidents is
by making the total number of deaths from driving more public through
advertisements or news channels. This exposure can help drivers break
the common belief that “it won’t happen to me” because the
numbers don’t lie. Personally, I have seen my mother drive
irresponsibly by texting and driving frequently. This bothered me
because I knew that a sizeable amount of car accidents occurs from
distracted driving such as by texting. One day, I finally spoke to
concerns to her and she acknowledge it but did not do any actions
towards solving the problem. So, the next time we were both in the
car together I asked my mother to borrow her phone and kept it in my
pocket until we reached our destination. After repeating this
multiple times, my mother became accustomed to driving without that
distraction and has significantly reduced phone usage behind the
wheel. Steps I have taken to become a safer driver is putting my
phone inside the glove compartment to improve my alertness of the
road and give it my undivided attention. I can help others become
safer on the road by reminding the person driving that there are more
people involved outside of car accidents and to be as attentive as
possible when behind the wheel. Furthermore, I can reinforce that
idea by giving the driver a small token such as a homemade bracelet
with the sole purpose of being a physical reminder to drive safely.
