Drivers ed is a pivotal part of a high school education due to it being a class where the information taught is universally applicable to all students. Despite what it is often depicted in shows, it does not only instruct students how to drive in a car but also teaches students the rules of the road as both a driver and a pedestrian to ensure safety. Thus, drivers ed is a large step in helping to reduce the deaths of drivers and pedestrians alike as a result of driving.

Despite the importance of drivers ed in schools, it is an elective instead of being a required class needed to graduate in most schools. Therefore, the number of students that potentially can be taught about safety while involved in traffic is stunted. This would not allow for all students to practice caution emphasized in this class. In turn, there are more deaths that could have been prevented. Also, another way to prevent deaths related to driving is periodic driving tests or courses required in addition to drivers’ licenses. People often forget the rules of the road after driving for so long. Further, the steps to acquiring a driver’s license is far too expensive for people who probably only see its acquisition being done through the means of learning how to drive. Hence, they do not see a driver’s license as necessary, so they drive on the road regardless. These courses and tests required to attain learner’s permits cost a lot of money that many are not willing to spend due to other, more pressing, obligations. Meaning, without learning the rules of the road and safety, they are driving with the lack of knowledge that prevents deaths. So, if these people are going to be driving on the road anyways, access to this information and the proper identification ought to be easier. All in all, the steps to prevent driving related deaths are the requirement of drivers ed in high school, instating periodic tests or courses of those with licenses, and making the access to licenses easier for all.

Thankfully, I have never been in a car accident but that does not mean that it’ll never happen because no one is beyond unpredictable accidents. However, I have many experiences of seeing friends and family drive irresponsibly on the road. Excessive speeding, not using turn signals, and driving too close to other cars are very commonplace. Therefore, it is important to take steps to be a better driver while also helping others drive safely. To make myself drive better and safer, I would have to drive mindful of everyone else on the road. The commonplace practices of driving displayed by my friends and family need to be checked by passengers to make them drive safe. Once they are urged to drive safe enough, they will make it a routine as their irresponsible driving has become.
