Driving as a Privilege

In the Driver’s Seat Scholarship

Based on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, California had nine deaths per 100,000 within the population in 2018. When an individual, regardless of their age or gender, is on the road they not only are conscious that they must arrive at their destination, but also that one is undertaking a huge responsibility for their safety and others. As a young driver, many don’t acknowledge the fact that having a driver’s license not only provides freedom to the individual but also a danger. Even parents are incapable of preventing it if the driver doesn’t recognize the dedication they must put in to be capable of managing their responsibility as adults in the driver’s seat. If a driver abuses their privileges they not only face the law but in unfortunate circumstances, death due to an accident can also occur. Therefore, to reduce the number of deaths, as a result of driving, we must become defensive drivers, and have a good foundation of learning from our drivers ed courses.

A driver must take many safety precautions when operating their vehicle. For example, making sure that you wear your seat belt, turning on your lights, and properly adjusting your mirrors. The positive outcome about doing these small actions is an increase in safety. Consequently, taking these steps can reduce the number of accidents and deaths.

Taking a drivers ed course is worth the investment because it provides drivers with a valuable foundation of laws, regulations and safety practices. The importance of a drivers ed conveys preparation, knowledge, and experience as a driver prepares to take the behind the wheel test. Hence, the course arguably provides a driver with confidence and reassurance.

Additionally, a driver must also be mindful of limiting their distractions, such as phones, eating, and changing their music. Drivers should also avoid using drugs or consuming alcohol along with not driving over the speed limit. In short, drivers need to exercise caution and utilize safe practices when operating a vehicle.

Overall, the important step any driver may take for greater responsibility is by dedicating your eyes on the road and recognizing that driving is a privilege that is earned through preparation. Even though information isn’t limited, resources are available to ensure safety and experience in order to reduce the number of deaths due to driving accidents.
