What makes a good driver? We all have been there, traffic jammed; everyone is driving slowly passing a totaled car. We try not to look because we were told not to in the driving manual, but it’s human nature to be curious so we glance as we drive past it. A good majority of us think that this will not happen to us. We even feel bad for the people involved in it; we are quick to think our loved ones won’t ever experience this. Well reader, we are wrong.

Americans are in car accidents more often than we think; car insurances will be out of business if it was otherwise. It is estimated 34,000 Americans die each year due to fatal car accidents. How can we prevent it? Well, we really cannot fully prevent it; sometimes the accident was out of our grasps such as weather conditions or manual malfunctions of the vehicle. One thing we can control is the level of driving education we acquire.

It is important for Americans to be well educated in driving and the road policies the Department of Motor Vehicles for your state have for you. Americans should be well educated to avoid the loss associated with not enough knowledge of your state’s driving policies. Some of the major losses are innocent lives. Practicing safe driving, such as following all driving rules, using common sense, staying alert at all times when driving, will decrease the number of fatal accidents in the country; as well as prevent traffic overflow.

In my opinion, the Department of Motor Vehicles for every state should cut the Driver’s License expiration time in half. Americans can maybe be required to watch driving rules and regulations videos as well as take the written/driving test every two years in order to renew their driver’s license. This will improve the numbers of fatalities related to car accidents, because Americans will get the rules and regulations refreshed in their mind more often. In addition, it will also help drivers stay informed of new driving laws/penalties in their state.

We are not guaranteed we will never be in a car accident, but we can all do our part and learn the importance of safe driving by staying informed and educated in our state’s driving laws. If each state will require its drivers to constantly review the driving policies/regulations and not just once every 4-6 years, we will decrease fatal accidents. The importance of safe driving is beneficial for you and your loved ones; we need to make a change to our current driving education system.
