Who
is Actually in Control?

Drinking
and driving is such a horrible thing to do because it is like texting
and driving, you never know the outcome and it can hurt so many
innocent people in the process. The youth still take advantage of
drinking and driving because they don’t think of the consequences
that can come with drinking and driving. Also, the youth feels like
they are young and nothing will happen to them and they are just
trying to have fun. I see a lot of youth especially college kids
drink at parties and then not remember anything from the night
before. It is very scary to not remember something that happened just
the night before. However, I do feel that society makes it feel
normal to not remember and get drunk. Some people think that it is
“cool” to get drunk and see how many beers they can chug, etc.
They think that they are out having a good time and they aren’t in
the right mind-set to call an uber, let their sober friend
(designated driver) drive them home, etc. For example, this past week
a Youtuber that I watched and loved dearly sadly passed away on his
25th birthday. His name was Corey La Barrie, he turned 25 and he went
to his friend’s house and they were all drinking and he trusted his
friend because he said that he was sober enough to drive him home.
Obviously, he wasn’t. His friend was too drunk to drive but he did
anyway and he crashed into a tree. His friend who was driving
survived and he tried to flee the scene after he crashed without even
looking at Corey to make sure he was okay. He did this because he was
too drunk to function however, he still drove drunk because he felt
that nothing would happen. Corey’s house was so close so he thought
nothing was going to happen being it is such a short distance from
where they were and from Corey’s house. A short distance caused
such a great pain for thousands around the world. Corey inspired so
many people including myself and in a blink of an eye he is just gone
forever. The youth nowadays can drink and get drunk but they need to
realize the consequences that could happen and be very cautious when
they are out drinking and getting drunk to the point where they can’t
function. If they can’t function themselves like walking or talking
then they shouldn’t be trying to function while driving a vehicle.
Another example that is close to home for me is my cousin was
disabled and lived in a group home. He goes out for a walk every
single morning, same time and he was crossing the street. A drunk
driver was speeding and hit him and he died on impact. I think the
only solution for youth to maybe stop is if someone close to them
gets hurt or worse by a drunk driver, other than that I don’t think
all of the youth will ever understand. Distracted driving should not
be done under any circumstances and people aren’t realizing that
even though they know what could happen. Drivers ed is a huge
importance to drill into everyone’s heads especially the youth. It
is important because the youth might be incoherent to what is
happening or they might think that it cannot happen to them because
they’re young but obviously, that is not the case. Certain measures
that should be taken to prevent the number of deaths is educating
people more and making the consequences greater than just a ticket or
taking them to the police station. I have seen my cousin text and
drive while I am in the car and I tell her not to do that while I’m
in the car and several times we almost crashed. I was in a mini car
crash with my parents however, it was distracting driving on the
other persons’ part not ours. The other person was lost and stopped
short and we rammed into her back but everyone was safe, thank God.
Certain things that I can do to be a better and safer driver as well
as help others on the road is when something is being done wrong like
texting while driving or if someone is swerving on the road like they
are drunk is to call the cops and tell them to keep, not only the
distracted driver but also the other drivers around them.
