Safe Driving

When I first started to drive, the word freedom came to mind. I did not think a whole lot about safety. There are rules to follow and steps to take to ensure the safety of one’s self and other drivers. Car accidents can be extremely painful physically and mentally. It is very important to know how to keep everyone safe.

When learning how to drive it is important to be educated on the rules of the road. There are so may situations that a person will experience on the road and if they are not educated on how to handle the situation it could end fatally. It is also important to stay alert and focused. Sometimes it is tempting to speed, answer a text message, or try to grab something for your child in the back seat. It is important to think about what your doing and refrain from unsafe activities.

About 7 years ago my youngest brother was in a car accident. He was 16 years old and it happened about a week before Christmas. The doctors told us that there was little chance of him making it. By God’s grace he is still here with us, but he will never be able to live on his own or live a normal life. He has traumatic brain injury. He was sitting in the back of the car when it happened, and the seatbelt failed. The boy who was driving the car was going high speed on a busy road and lost control when running into another vehicle head on. He was a young boy who wasn’t thinking about the safety of others and changed my family’s life forever. Luckily, everyone else in the accident came out with little to no injuries. Young drivers should have more education on these types of accidents. His accident could have easily been avoided.

It is important to me that my family is always safe. I recently bought a new car and am so happy that it has a lot of safety features for me to utilize. A few of the features are the lane departure, a lane change sensor, and a built-in navigation. I feel like this is a huge bonus in the newer cars to help with keeping people safe. Having these features helps me to feel more comfortable on the road, especially in areas that I’m not as familiar with. I feel like this step of buying a car, with these features, has been a great step in being safer on the road for my family and others on the road.

Driving safe should be a priority for anyone who plans to drive. Education, responsibility and, safety features are big factors in being safe on the road. I will continue to educate myself on driving and using the available features to help keep my family and others safe on the road. I will also, continue to make my focus a priority while on the road.
