The Consequences of Reckless Driving

Driving is such a mundane activity that most do not realize it has dangerous implications. It is hard to comprehend that driving is more dangerous than flying in a plane. However, people are more afraid of flying than driving. Drivers ed is extremely necessary to reduce the number of driving-related deaths. Too often, I see reckless drivers on the street, including myself. Many will cut others off, switch lanes without using their signal, speed, and go on their phones. I recognize that these actions are highly irresponsible, yet, I continue to do them. I let my recklessness control my driving, nearly getting myself into accidents. Many drivers have this mindset as well. This has happened to my brother. He was driving recklessly and crashed into another car. He learned it the hard way and now drives more carefully. A good solution to this is a regular test of a driver’s knowledge of the rules of the road. By making testing mandatory, it forces drivers to remind themselves of the rules, reinforcing it in their minds. Raising the price of tickets will work to an extent but does not work as well as educating drivers. Personally, I remind myself of the consequences of reckless driving and practice safe driving. Whenever I am in the car with friends or family, I will remind them to slow down and be safer. Reminding other drivers to safely drive will significantly reduce the amount of accidents on the road.
