The Importance of Safe Driving

Drivers ed teaches you the skills necessary to be a safe and responsible driver. You learn the laws and rules of the road. Drivers ed is supposed to show you vehicle safety as a driver and pedestrian. The traffic fatality rate is 12.4 deaths per 100,000 people in the United States. More than 38,000 people die every year in crashes. One of the reasons crashes become fatal is that people don’t wear seatbelts. New technology should be made to make seatbelts more comfortable since discomfort is the most common complaint. Another reason for fatal crashes is drunk driving, so people should also have a designated driver if they go out and drink. In a drivers ed course it is stressed to not text and drive, yet people still do it. Personally, my mother texts and drives, and I become anxious when she does it. In fear of being seen as disrespectful, I never say anything. Instead, I pay attention to the road for her as the passenger. The most basic thing you learn in drivers ed is to stop at red lights. Each year there are 700-800 fatal car accidents due to red-light runners. My cousin ran a red light one time in a rush and luckily a car wasn’t coming from the other way. To help others become a safer driver, I could encourage them to not text and drive and obey the rules of the road.
