Your life could change in one second. Think about it. Checking that notification for one second could change your life. Answering that call for just one second could change your life. That one “simple” distraction that you paid attention to for one second could change your life. Simply put, distracted driving diverts your attention away from the road. Although some may argue that these small distractions such as texts or calls only take one second, they don’t realize that one second could change their life, as something unexpectedly significant could happen. The good news is that one second could change your life, but in a positive way. It would only take one second to educate yourself on the dangers of distracted driving. There are many things you can do that will help prevent accidents on the road which only take one second. It will only take one second to put your phone on do not disturb mode. It will take only one second to form a new habit of keeping your eyes on the road. It will only take one second to google statistics of death by distracted driving, and how you can make sure it won’t happen to you. Distracted driving kills thousands of people each year, and injures many more. Deaths from distracted driving don’t only affect the driver, but also the passengers, the passengers in the opposite car, pedestrians, and bicyclists. This information can be taught to many people through the “One Second Initiative”.  The One Second Initiative could reach out to many people through creative means such as quick texts about the effects of distracted driving, one second worth of someone’s conversation, or a poster that takes just one second to read over. To explain further, if just one person seconds out a chain text with the message “THE ONE SECOND INITIATIVE: Please do not check texts while you are driving, one second could change your life.” This simple message could reach out to many hearts and minds to save many lives. In addition, this concept can be applied to the other ideas of the initiative. This is very important, as your life could change in one second.
