Drivers Ed Scholarship Essay

In regards to reducing the amount of deaths that result from driving, it is important to get drivers ed because it can teach you to be a safer driver. Often times, teenagers who have their license do not keep the rules of the road in mind. Thus, leading to more accidents and unfortunately, sometimes death. Following the rules of the road can not only save someone else’s life, but yours as well.

One of the most important steps that can be taken to reduce driving-related deaths is taking a driving course. These courses can be taken online or in person. Driving courses teach you how to be a safe driver, as well as consequences that can occur when you are not being a safe driver. These consequences can be fines, or sometimes your license can be taken away. Another important step is to not let younger drivers on the road by themselves as soon as they receive their license. Most often, these younger drivers are excited to finally be on the road and have “freedom.” However, they focus on the driving aspect and not the rules. For example, I have a friend named Grace who got her license during sophomore year. Quickly after getting her license, her mom let her drive herself places. When Grace was going to her boyfriend’s house, she was not paying attention to her speed, and she was going 75 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. This lead her to getting pulled over, having to go to court, and getting her license taken away. If the parents of younger drivers wait for them to become more experienced in driving, they will most likely not have to face such consequences.

I have had the experience of being in a fender bender. I was in the car with my mom at the grocery store, when a woman, not paying attention, backed into the side of our car. The woman was on the phone and not focused on her surroundings. Fortunately, everyone was safe and the car was not wrecked too badly. However, if the woman was paying attention, the situation would have never happened.

I have never seen any of my friends or family driving irresponsibly, but I have had a family member suffer the consequences of someone else driving irresponsibly. My cousin was on her way home from the grocery store, when all of a sudden a man that was speeding ran a red light and crashed into her car. Her car suffered many damages, and unfortunately, my cousin passed away from the mishap.

The main step that can be taken to ensure people are being safe drivers is to stress the consequences that you may face when driving unsafely. Another step that can be taken is to explain that other people can be at risk too if you are not driving safe.
