The Importance of Drivers ed

There is extreme importance in drivers ed on reducing the number of driving and car accident related deaths. The drivers control the vehicle and in most cases, are the causes of the accidents. Since the drivers are the ones in control, they hold the power and that makes their education of the utmost importance. If drivers were better educated on their responsibility for safe driving and the consequences of failing to drive safely, we could greatly reduce the number of accidents and accident-related deaths in America.

I think this education starts with first time drivers, in teaching them the importance of safe driving and what can happen when you do not follow safety guidelines. It is beneficial to all of us if new drivers have proper drivers ed, so they learn how to become competent and safe drivers. We need to be aware of the dangers of distracted driving, as well as obeying traffic laws. Texting while driving is probably one of the highest causes of accidents in today’s day and age, or at least using a cell phone and driving. Enforcing the dangers of this, while also educating on the alternatives, such as how connecting to your car’s Bluetooth and making phone calls through that, can reduce the incidences of this happening.

I have unfortunately been in several car accidents, some of which were very serious. I think it is honestly a miracle that I have not been seriously injured in any of them. When I was a child someone ran a red light and plowed right into our car, crushing my door in so badly they had to bring the jaws of life to get me out. That was a terrifying experience. I have been rear-ended so often that I am afraid of cars being behind me, especially in situations when you must suddenly use the brakes. All my experiences in car accidents have had a strong impact in my understanding of the dangers of the road and the need to be safe and careful at all times.

There are concrete steps I can take myself to be a safer driver, such as being mindful of what distracts me while driving and coming up with ways to eliminate those distractions. I can also be more aware of my surroundings and the drivers around me. Sometimes accidents can be avoided by being aware of other people’s driving; even if you were not necessarily the cause, you can be the solution. I can help others by initiating conversations about driving safely and the importance that it holds. I can also help by teaching my son the importance of safe driving and setting a good example for him to follow.
