Drivers ed teaches you how to be a safe driver. They teach you the rules of the road. Drivers ed is very important for young drivers. So many young drivers get into car accidents within the first few years of having their license. I should know, I was one of them. It all happened only a few months after having my license. I was shopping with my friend and the accident happened when I was on my way to taking him home. I approached a traffic light and I was in the lane to go straight. I realized that I needed to turn left at that light. I chose to drive straight through the light and was going to get into the right lane and turn into a gas station to turn around. When the light turned green I drove through the light and I did not check my blindspot well enough to my right and I merged into the guy next to me. Thankfully we were both going low speeds and luckily, no one was hurt, the only damage was to our cars.

When I drive I do everything I can to drive as safe as possible. I try to always double-check my blindspot before merging into another lane. Young drivers like me should always be aware of the other drivers around them and make sure they are driving safely. I have a few friends that have been in car accidents themselves. One was trying to turn into a parking lot and it was really icy, when she turned she lost control and rear-ended a parked car. The other was turning left on to another street, she did not see the car coming and was t-boned by the car. All drivers will most likely get into an accident at least once in their life. The only thing we can do to protect ourselves is to drive carefully and defensively. Drivers ed can help you learn how to build both of those skills.

Another thing that drivers can do to become a safer driver is to listen to your parents’ driving experiences and guidance. I have learned a lot from my parents about their accidents they’ve been in and seen. I have also learned a great deal from my grandparents as well. Drivers that are older than you have a lot of driving experience and are willing to share with you because they want you to be a safe and defensive driver.
