Solution on How to Be Safe on the Road

There have been many unfortunate and unexpected occurrences that have happened on the road due to the disastrous decisions made in connection with drunk driving and more recently texting while operating a motorized vehicle. Many of which have ended in tragedy, whether it concluded in death, disfiguration, or by that of loved ones. When considering the depth of these situations and the resulting consequences, I would like to offer some solutions on how to make the road a safer place for all drivers.

The overall intention of drivers ed is to reduce the nation’s annual total of driving related fatalities by learning about the preferred safe driving practices, how to implement those practices while driving unmonitored, and about the unfortunate consequences involved when lesser driving practices are used instead.

The aforementioned practices result in teen drivers becoming cautious and more aware of their own driving principles, analytical to the driving habits of other operators, and contributing to the goal of potentially preventing road-side casualties.

There are perhaps several steps that could be taken to reduce the number of driving related deaths. One suggestion may be requiring drivers to place phones in the car’s glove box to prevent texting while driving. Another idea involves detailed education on sleep deprivation and the effect on drivers which may encourage late night drivers to stop for rest.

Lastly, in addition to requiring defensive driving course for new operators, I would like to see a focused advertisement campaign promoting responsible drivers to take ownership in reporting suspected drunk drivers in order to avoid the likelihood of potential collisions with operators or other obstacles on the road.

I am fortunate to have not been involved in an accident, however I have unfortunately witnessed my mother drive irresponsibly and on occasions text while driving or “fiddle” with Google Maps while driving. Granted most of this texting was done while at a stopped light, however her concentration during these times was centered on the message that she was constructing rather than her vehicle’s surroundings. These unhappy events would necessitate me to inform my mother that the traffic signal had returned to green and it was time to resume our trip in order to avoid a rear collision or other grave occurrence.

In conclusion, the outlined steps are easily attainable for drivers to avoid accidents, enable operators to make more informed decisions, and allow them to arrive at their destination in a safe manner.

Admittingly while writing this essay, I have identified things that I can immediately do to strengthen my own driving habits to include turning off my phone while driving or at a minimum, place it glove box. I also pledge to drive a bit slower during unfavorable weather conditions as well as be cognizant of my own sleep deprivation as it relates to driving. Lastly, I promise to encourage my friends to incorporate these principles in their driving so that everyone gets home in the same condition in which they left. That way we all win.
