Driver Education

When driving it is important to always keep the rules of the road in mind as well as the safety importance of yourself and others around you. Learning how to drive can go two ways: the most exciting experience or the most traumatizing. We all have been taught how to drive in multiple different ways. The best way to avoid collisions when driving is to ensure that we drive how the book teach us. For us young individuals when we are in a vehicle, we want to get from point A to point B; whether it’s going to the store, work or even dropping off family members. For others, they like to race and have competition from other cars which can lead to speeding, running red lights and not breaking in time. For example, most people that drive constantly have been in a situation where they felt as if they were going a little faster or if they turned while not in the clear of incoming cars, that they would have lost their lives or someone else’s. Driving is more than learning and memorizing the rules of the road trying to reach a destination. Being a responsible driver will help reduce the numbers of death caused my reckless drivers.

Some of the steps that can be used in safe driving can be making sure incoming traffic is clear before turning, ensuring that you are going the speed limit on streets and freeways, ensure that break lights are in proper function to alert vehicles behind you and to be sure that there is enough space in between cars when idling at red lights. These are a few ideas of steps to follow when on the road. Other steps include not drinking while driving and distractive driving. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Transportation Safety, “There are three main types of distraction: visual, manual and cognitive. Visual distraction is taking your eyes off the road, manual is taking your hands off the wheel and cognitive is taking your mind off the road” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Distracted Driving | Motor Vehicle Safety | CDC Injury Center). The three different types are a reasonable reason as to why there are so many accidents here in America. We are always on our phones. It can be checking emails, sending a text or talking on the phone. Our minds are no longer 100% on the road anymore when situations like this happen on the daily. People are holding their coffee while driving or trying to give something to their children in the back seat, which leads to not having full control of the steering wheel. Driving by a construction site or new shopping outlet and running into another car because your mind was no longer on the road rather on what you would buy next paycheck. Eyes should always stay on the road, both hands should be on the wheel (left and ten and right at two), and your mind should be on getting to the destination smoothly and safely.

In my experience, I have seen family members not drive responsible. They have been on their phones trying to change their music instead of waiting, they have tailgated cars because they are not paying attention and breaking a little late. This is a scary experience, they posed as not caring about what they were doing if they got to where they needed to go. I have seen car accidents happen because both individuals were on their phones and not paying attention as traffic was approaching at high speed. I have lost a member of the family because they lost control of the steering wheel by removing their hands and trying to drive with their knee which resulted in crashing into a semi-truck in the opposite direction. This made me realize how important it was to pay attention to the road while driving.

The most important steps I will take to practice safe driving to always have my mind, ears and eyes on the road because after watching videos and having personal experience it is so important because you are not able to drive for everyone. You can only drive for you which makes it important to always follow the rules even if they sound crazy to follow. Rules are made to keep control and order of all situations. I believe everyone should want to stay safe from driving because nobody wants to get hurt or worse pass away over a mistake that could have been prevented. The best takes away from this is to keep focused on all times when driving. The more people that follow and abide by the rules around the world, the more the numbers of deaths caused by driving will be reduced and driving can feel safer for all individuals.
