The Importance of safe driving and safe driving education is imperative to having successful and safe trips for everyone. It starts with when we first are going to learn how to drive, whether we get our driving education from our parents or a driving school. The knowledge and tendencies from our educators are a key factor in how we view driving and how we drive. Since young drivers are still very impressionable, we tend to pick up tendencies and traits of our learners. I was taught by how my parents how to drive and so I picked up the tendencies of my parents and probably my sister who would drive me around and I saw how she drove and figured “well if they are doing it, then its okay”. And that can be many things such as eating while driving, drinking water, talking to the other passengers in the car and preparing music on our phones.

We know that being a distracted driver increases the risk of getting into an accident and be very costly and potentially very dangerous, however we all have hubris in our abilities to be a great driver and not get in danger. The way we view the danger of a crash to our self-interest and commutability as much less even though we should be more worried about the crash then not having music playing or whatever we may be doing at that time. One way of reducing the number of deaths of distracted drivers is have them retest every time they need to renew their license. This way we can see how their skills have progressed or have regressed. We should be tested in a way that simulates the way we not with nothing going on. Since many of us have directions from google maps going on, some music or audio additionally, have the best the person with those conditions. Since when we first got our licenses, we were very cautious about how we acted in the car, but as we drive more and more and getting more comfortable, we often let more things slid in our car. We often get looser and more let more distractions fly that when we first started to drive didn’t. Since we have a certain hubris to ourselves, we think “I’ve down this before and I’m fine.”

I do know someone that has been affected by reckless driving and that is my younger cousin who luckily survived a very serious crash, but still it should be taken more seriously from now on. He was in his car with his friends when a saw a car with a few girls his age and he chased them, they went around a turn too fast and went of the side of the road into a river. He and his friends survived with minimal injury; however, his car was totaled. Just that slight action of going after girls and having fun could have led to serious consequences. This situation could have happened to many people with a slight tweak here and there. Instead of chasing after girls on a narrow road you could be driving on a freeway and a car is coming on your right, you look over see some people your age and have a joke by revving your car up and look over. When you look after and don’t notice a car in front of slowing down you could be accelerating faster then you crash into someone else and be sent through your windshield all for a laugh.

How we can continue education for drivers is through continuous testing for checking any cracks. If a person fails to pass the test and depending on how long they drive they would have to go through a few classes, you will increase/decrease the classes needed for a person depending on how long they have ben driving, and how badly they failed the test. We would finally need to have steeper financial implications for people who do crash while being distracted, we would have to make them substantial enough to be valid deterrent. With the rise of more and more young kids on the road with, the Baby Boomer generation getting older every year it is imperative that we deeply examine the way we test for driving and be imperative that we keep looking for ways to get safer on the roads. If we keep the current ways of testing once and then that’s it we can get into a society where fatal crashes become all the more frequent.
