Importance of Driver’s Ed

1. I believe, if people were taught how to drive properly when first learning, the roads would be much safer. Currently, teens are allowed a permit with barely any true guidance, and often wreck their cars with unprofessional driving. Learning how to properly and safely drive in the beginning is a skill useful in many aspects of life. Young teens would understand the dangers of the road to keep from messing around so often, promoting road safety.

2. Road tests should be more frequently required, for people to refresh their memory on what is safe on the road. Rules may change over time, and if old drivers aren’t supplied with the new information it can cause accidents. Course refreshers should be supplied every few months, even if they’re just small reminders or quizzes. These could even be done online, if people don’t want to have to leave their house for the quiz.

Driving education should be organized better. Lessons should be longer and more detailed, with less memorization and more general information. Tutors for driving training can be expensive, pushing learning young people away. These young people then rely on the internet to teach them.

In fact, teens are the most likely age group to cause accidents on the road, usually because of distractions. Teens may check their phones while driving or simply not pay attention, and wind up in a severe accident.

I believe there should be an age cap to drivers allowed on the road. Anyone over the age of 80 should need someone to drive them places instead of being on the road. They may have years of experience, but their age is especially a danger if they get into an accident. Over half of the elderly people that get into car accidents die from the damage caused to their bodies. Their old age can also affect their state of mind when driving, causing them to swerve or forget to stop at lights.

3. When I was much younger, my father was rear-ended by someone whose brakes failed at a stop sign. I was very young, and I don’t remember it fully, only from what my father told me had happened. It was an accident, and the car was to blame, not the driver. However, we still had to pull over and wait for an ambulance to come for the woman in the car that hit us. Her airbag was set off, and therefore needed to be checked for any neck injuries.

My mother is incredibly picky with who I’m allowed to drive in the car of. Unless she’s known my friend’s parents for a very long time, she won’t let me in anyone else’s car. She also won’t let young adults drive me, like older siblings with licenses, only adults with many years of practice.

I do know my friends are all safe on the road, even if I’m not allowed to drive with them. They understand the importance of road safety, and most are still using their parents cars, so it’s even more necessary to stay safe.

Both of my parents are very safe drivers. My father is the one teaching me to drive, and I’m learning quickly. If everyone was given a proper road education, or helped properly by their parents, I’m sure deaths would be reduced.

4. Students need to pay attention in driving class. Most kids don’t listen to the teacher or the lesson, and mess around in class. They may not see the importance of learning, or just don’t want to be bothered. Then, if they’re lucky, their parents might teach them how to drive properly. If not, they’re allowed on the road with just a permit and little to no true understanding of how driving works. This quickly leads to car accidents.

When I’m in the car with my parents, I pay attention to how they behave in situations like heavy rain, merging in tight traffic, or letting ambulances by.

Not every video on the internet is going to be an accurate help for learning to drive, but there are many made by true professionals or that can work as follow ups to lessons in school.

School driving lessons should be updated. If a lesson is a decade old, the information certainly won’t be up to date, and the new details added over that year will be left out. Those details could be very important. Driving lesson plans should constantly be refreshed with any new details added to the law.
