I have very limited experience driving admittedly but driving with friends and family on an individual basis. I have been in a few minor accidents, one major but mostly minor. I often see my friends driving recklessly. The thing about youth is that it makes you feel indestructive and I can promise you that no matter how many swerves, bumps or crashes they don’t usually change the way they drive or the way they approach altercations. I have family members that also drive a tad recklessly though it honestly isn’t as bad as people my age. A lot of the people I know got their licenses during covid without needing a driving test which might explain the inherent recklessness of their driving. On the same note, my mother is 49 years old and has been driving for years and we’ve still had close calls despite how well she drives. When I drive myself, I’m anxious and careful though inexperienced enough to make certain mistakes. I am, however, learning from the mistakes of the people I’m around and taking little mental notes on the mistakes that others are making to apply to my own driving habits.
There are a few ways that I and others should try and better utilize safe driving, like having rational thought and knowing how to perform under pressure. Avoiding distractions and practicing accurate defensive driving. It’s also important to mind your attention and avoid things like texting and driving and any sort of notably distracting music, a friend of mine ran us off the road after being too enthralled with a song we were listening to. Along that same topic avoid driving when you’re tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Being alert when driving makes it less likely for accidents to occur or in some cases more likely to spot an altercation before it occurs. Being alert and focused on the road is crucial to safe driving. It’s also important to make sure all passengers, including yourself, are wearing a seatbelt in case of an emergency.
Driving education is crucial in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving. By teaching drivers, the rules of the road, safety regulations, and defensive driving, driver education can help reduce the number of accidents caused by reckless driving and distracted driving. Steps such as implementing stricter traffic laws, improving road infrastructure, and increasing enforcement of traffic laws can also help reduce deaths related to driving. As drivers, we can take personal responsibility for our safety by obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions, practicing defensive driving, and educating others.
