Road Safety A Life-Saving Responsibility
Whether you are behind the wheel, on the street, or a pedestrian crossing the road, road safety affects you and everyone around you. In today’s world where roads are becoming more crowded and congested every passing moment, a minor mistake could result in a fatal conclusion. As I have been in car accidents before, and am a learning driver, I understand the importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths caused by driving. The first time I felt the need for road safety was in an accident when I was going home from school in a school bus, a car smashed into the bus from the right side and the bus fell sideways. I still have a scar right above my eye from that incident. This experience left a lasting impact on me, and underscored the importance of responsible and safe driving practices.
Driver education is necessary as it teaches how to safely operate a vehicle and can help to reduce the likelihood of road accidents such as these. I strongly believe that experience and learning from those who are experienced help one improve; therefore, by providing training and education, people can better understand the rules of the road and develop the skills needed to navigate through various situations while driving. This can contribute to a decrease in the amount of accidents and fatalities that occur each year. Furthermore, in addition to driver education, there are several steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One key step is to enforce strict laws and regulations related to driving, such as speed limits and mandatory seatbelt usage, with consequences.
Drivers should make sure that everyone is wearing a seatbelt in the car before they start driving, seatbelts have been proven to significantly lower the risk of injuries or even death in the event of an accident, moreover it is crucial to only drive when you are calm and not preoccupied because doing so can make it difficult for you to respond to unforeseen events such as someone entering your lane. Passengers also play an essential role in road safety, passengers need to make sure that the driver does not get distracted by them and let them maintain focus on the road. Additionally, public awareness campaigns and initiatives can be launched to educate people about the importance of road safety and responsible driving, such as the “Mothers Against Drunk Driving”, or “MADD”, organization which has drastically improved public awareness and helped over 850,000 victims since 1980. However the best advice my father gave me is to protect myself from other people’s mistakes, most road incidents happen due to mistakes and the best way to protect oneself is to be aware and to be ready to protect yourself from other people’s mistakes. When I was a child, me and my family were driving on a bridge at night that was under renovation, and only one side of the road was open for two-way traffic. Suddenly, a car came from the other side and hit our car, but my father was able to quickly react to it and turned the car just enough so it would not be a head on collision, but the other car still ended up scraping most of our car and breaking the suspension and wheel mechanism. The driver who hit us was drunk and couldn’t even walk straight after the accident. and we had to wait for a long time to reach home safely due to the area being countryside, thankfully everyone was fine and only faced minor injuries.
As a teenager myself I am shocked when I hear about other people from my age group get into fatal accidents and engaging in reckless driving behavior. Recently, I came across an article about a teenage driver who was making donuts through an intersection and ended up causing a serious accident; he smashed into a police vehicle late at night, moreover, the teenager did not have a license and did not own the car. This incident led to an officer suffering spine and head injuries, highlighting the serious consequences of such irresponsible behavior. The teenager will have it put on his driving record making it harder to get a license or buying a car insurance. To be a better and safer driver, I am committed to following all traffic rules and regulations, including speed limits and using signals when changing lanes. Additionally, I plan to stay informed of the traffic laws and regulations and educate myself every chance I get. I also recognize the importance of always being aware of my surroundings while driving and never engaging in risky or dangerous behaviors such as texting while driving, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or illegal street racing.
Conclusively, driver education is really important in reducing the number of deaths caused by driving. I opine we can reduce the likelihood of accidents and fatalities on the road by educating individuals and especially youth, about the consequences one might face after they make even a minor mistake operating a vehicle. Additionally, strict laws and regulations related to driving, public awareness campaigns, and personal responsibility are all necessary to create a safer driving environment for everyone.
