Safe Driving

Driving is transportation. Whether you are going to school, work, or everyday errands, most of us are on the roads daily. Without having the ability to drive, mankind would be lost, and we need to figure out a way to make it safer to protect one another. Throughout this essay, I plan on discussing how driving is and has become an issue for mankind and what we can do to solve that and make our roads safer for everyone.

When it comes to driving and drivers’ education, we ensure that we are putting safe drivers out on our roads. By testing a driver, you are ensuring he/she knows the rules of the road. You are ensuring that they are being safe, using turn signals, and continuously having both hands on the steering wheel at all times. If we continue using drivers education as a way of providing stability to new drivers, I say we need to be more strict. I understand we can’t be perfect, but three strikes is quite a bit when it comes to driving. You will be putting everyone else in danger. By being stricter we are ensuring our drivers are being put on the road knowing the ins and outs of driving.

Other than drivers education, parents have a huge impact on their children and how they drive. If you’re sixteen and learning to drive, your parents should be teaching you how to properly handle a car. If the parents are driving, they should be continuously demonstrating to their children what to do and how to do it safely. When turning, use a turn signal and have both hands on the steering wheel. etc. Although parents are a huge impact when it comes to safer roads, friends and other family are as well. Whether they are teaching you to drive or they are doing the driving. They need to be aware you are learning and you need to know how to be as safe as possible on the road. Watch yourself, and others will follow.

Personally, I haven’t ever been in a serious car accident, only fender benders. I have witnessed my father in a near death accident and none of it was considered his fault. He was at a four way stop when he had stopped and checked before continuing. As he continued, a truck had missed the stop sign and t-boned him going 80-mph in a 45-mph zone. Seeing this accident happen after the fact, I realized how irresponsible the other guy was. He didn’t even think about looking or slowing down, he was just riding the tide all the way through. I know it is highly important to keep an eye on your surroundings and especially what is in front of you. Growing up, I was always being driven by friends and family on a daily. I came to learn that no one takes driving seriously. People have told me, “I have been doing this for years, no need to worry.” But, when it comes to driving, there’s always a need to worry because you do not know what is going to come flying around that corner.

Some steps I can take to become a better and safer driver on the roads is to be aware. Be aware of what is around me and be aware of my hands and feet. I always am reassuring myself of where my hands need to be on the steering wheel in case something does come out of nowhere. I have always been one to speed, knowing it isn’t safe. I know I can be harder on myself when it comes down to it. I need to follow the speed and ensure if I need to speed up to get over for a turn, I am doing it safely. Constantly checking rearview mirrors, blind spots, and ensuring my blinker is on to make sure I am clear to move over.

All in all, driving is a dangerous task to do whether you see it or not. To ensure safety we need to be strict on drivers education and all the role models we have in our lives. It is important to show our future drivers what they need to do rather than what they can do. I always grew up with people that sped everywhere, and look at me now. I grew up with irresponsible drivers and I became one. By showing your children responsible driving from the get-go, we ensure they will be safe drivers when its their time to get behind the wheel.
